QUOTING FROM INTRADA.COM

Wow! At last! Alan Silvestri's complete orchestral soundtrack for legendary Robert Zemeckis movie, released by Universal, produced by Steven Spielberg, starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd. Spectacular 2-CD set offers every cue Silvestri fashioned for landmark movie, presented from complete multi-track scoring session masters. CD 1 features now-iconic score used in movie. (Songs can be found on MCA label release.) But there's more! Many film fans know movie underwent changes in lead actor & serious tone of initial production. Find out now how Silvestri made changes as well! CD 2 presents early sessions featuring entire score Silvestri recorded before re-scoring with now-familiar one. Early version features darker, more serious tone in music than final version. Cool alternate scoring highlight: powerful trombone chords for initial version of Marty arriving in "Peabody Barn". Another powerful highlight: lengthy, intense action music for "George To The Rescue". Highlighting both discs, of course: early and final versions of complete "Clocktower" sequence, a genuine cinema-scoring milestone. Authoritative notes by Michael Matessino on background of production, scoring details, session dates plus great color stills complete package. Both early version and familiar "famous" version of score offer non-stop excitement! Alan Silvestri conducts. Note: While this is a limited release, we don't want anyone to miss out on this important album. For that reason, we are electing not to specify a quantity, but our Agreement allows us to exceed the usual 3000 limit. There should be more than enough to go around!

MASSIVE MIKLÓS RÓZSA TREASURY OF M-G-M SCORES TO ARRIVE ON 15-CD BOX SET

Complete scores to Quo Vadis, Madame Bovary and The Power highlight
Film Score Monthly’s magnificent collection celebrating a true giant of film music

Linden, VA – November 23, 2009 – An upcoming release from Film Score Monthly is destined to become one of the most essential soundtrack collections of all time.

FSM presents the Miklós Rózsa Treasury (1949-1968), a 15-CD set celebrating one of the giants of film music. In this single package FSM makes available virtually every surviving, as-yet-unreleased note from the composer’s fertile and productive association with M-G-M.

At the core of the set are the first-ever complete releases of Madame Bovary and Quo Vadis (reconstructed with sound effects), two of the most sought-after titles in the composer’s filmography. Scores that have previously circulated in pirated editions – Young Bess, The Story of Three Loves and All the Brothers Were Valiant – are included with professional mastering and comprehensive bonus tracks. There are also complete (or near-complete) scores that have never appeared in any prior format, such as The Light Touch, Crisis, The Asphalt Jungle, Tip on a Dead Jockey, Something of Value and Crest of the Wave, plus surviving cues from The Red Danube, The Miniver Story and East Side, West Side. All this – and more: the U.K. recording of Knights of the Round Table is included for the first time complete (an abridged version was released by Varèse Sarabande), and Rózsa’s uncredited contribution to Beau Brummell is presented alongside the full original score by Richard Addinsell.

Extensive bonus tracks throughout the set shed light on both the filmmaking and composing processes, allowing fans to see how certain ideas were developed and changed over time.

The Treasury “closes the book” on previous FSM releases Knights of the Round Table and Lust for Life with additional bonus tracks; and also includes bonus tracks from King of Kings and Ivanhoe for which there was not room on their earlier Rhino editions.

This amazing set also makes available several score re-recordings conducted by Rózsa himself, including El Cid, The V.I.P.s and the first genuine stereo CD release of King of Kings. And for the first time ever on CD, listeners can hear the “greatest hits” album Rózsa recorded for MGM Records in 1963: Great Movie Themes Composed by Miklós Rózsa.

Crowning this magnificent achievement is the premiere release of the complete score to The Power – previously available only in abridged form, now with extensive bonus tracks and mastered for the first time from the newly discovered, original 35mm scoring masters.

The three clamshell cases come in a deluxe box with a 48-page booklet containing a short essay and complete track listings. Online you will find free extensive notes in the finest FSM tradition by regulars Lukas Kendall and Al Kaplan, plus Rózsa Society members Frank K. DeWald and John Fitzpatrick. There are also original LP notes and a few surprises.

This is a set to be loved and cherished by Rozsaphiles past, present and future. With only 2,000 being pressed, it is sure to become a treasured collector’s item.

More on JAMES HORNER's "AVATAR"

Brief ‘Avatar’ interview with Horner posted

Hollywood Dailies has posted a brief interview with composer James Horner, shot during the last day of scoring sessions for the much anticipated James Cameron sci-fi epic Avatar. The video features several quick glimpses of the big orchestral score, with the 56-year old Horner conducting the orchestra wearing a baseball cap. Horner says that he was allowed to work exclusively on the film for about a year and that Cameron didn’t want him to work on other projects during the time. “He did’t want me to dilute it,” Horner comments.

Click HERE to view the video interview, originally linked at moviescoremagazine.com

Also, check out a first review of the score, hosted on empireonline.com

"As you would imagine — and even on the tiny speakers we heard them on — the music is huge in scope and heart. Mirroring the film’s dynamic of technology vs. the spiritual, the music splits between synthesised and acoustic instruments, the entire orchestra getting a thorough workout: everything from South American instrumentation to solo violin, choral chanting to driving percussion gets a chance to shine."

AUDIO: On The Score With Alexandre Desplat

ON THE SCORE, original source:

There’s a gift for rich, cinematic melody that seems to be a French birthright, one that such Gallic composers as Georges Delerue to Maurice Jarre have imparted to Hollywood with such scores as “Steel Magnolias” and “Ghost.” And there’s no doubt their successor at imparting American films with lush, magical themes is Alexandre Desplat. The Greek-born composer would have dozens of scores behind him before getting his first English-language outing with the chess drama “The Luzhin Defense,” the first of many art films that came calling for his inventive sense of old-school melody, as his acclaimed and inventively haunting scores for “Girl with the Pearl Earring” and “Birth” would lead Desplat to apply his unique approach to such stalwart American films genres as female-centric comedy (“The Upside of Anger”), political thrillers (“Syriana”), gritty crime drama (“Hostage”), period epics (“The Painted Veil”) and effects-filled fantasy (“The Golden Compass”).

But whatever the musical genre, Alexandre Desplat’s scores have always seemed to take place in another, lushly magical world where ethereal electronic textures and strings reign. It could be heard as he hauntingly regressed Brad Pitt in his Oscar-nominated score for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” or in the emotional romance of this summer’s trio of Gallic girl power movies “Cheri,” “Julie and Julia” and “Coco Before Chanel.” Now for the fall, Desplat finds one of his most eccentric and wondrous scores with his combination of Spaghetti western stylings and rustic barnyard magic for Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” But even the fandom of “Fox”’s original author Roald Dahl can’t compare to the teen legions who follow “The Twilight Saga,” an impossibly romantic world of love struck teens and ageless vampires whom Desplat meets fangs-on with a swooningly romantic score, one that bestows old-school Gothic eroticism to this young adult take on the bloodsucking mythos. It’s a series that Desplat bestows with stunning, dark beauty. And that’s just the tip of a scoring future that includes Terence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” and Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost.”

Now on a new edition of On the Score, Alexandre Desplat reveals what it’s like to be France’s next big import to the Hollywood scoring scene, and how his music has continued to find a universally affecting melodic language for both intimate films and the studio mainstream.

With the goal of earning some extra cash, four unwitting volunteers sign up for what they believe is just another paid research study. Instead, they embark upon the worst night of their lives, becoming pawns in a deadly, classified government program that was thought to have been terminated more than 20 years earlier. As a group, they are presented with a series of questions and a finite window of time by which each of them must submit a unique numerical answer. Presumably the subject who is furthest from the correct response will be "removed" from the experiment. They soon come to realize that, in this lethal psychological game, the correct answer is not always the right one. Behind the scenes, the mysterious and brooding Dr. Phillips (Peter Stormare) deviously pulls the strings as the most recent addition to his team, military psychologist Ms. Reilly (Chloë Sevigny), is emotionally torn by her first assignment. Director Jonathan Liebesman takes the viewer on a dark and suspenseful ride into the depths of the human mind, meticulously revealing pieces of the puzzle along the way. The sterile and safe environment he initially creates quickly deteriorates into an unstable madhouse as average civilians must make seemingly impossible choices to survive.

The psychological and disturbing score is from Brian Tyler (Eagle Eye, Fast And Furious).

Richard Marvin's Original Score to "Surrogates" is Available on iTunes and Amazon.com

SURROGATES CREATES 4th COLLABORATION BETWEEN
COMPOSER RICHARD MARVIN & DIRECTOR JONATHAN MOSTOW

The score is available now through Lakeshore Records on iTunes and Amazon.com – in stores Nov. 24

Composer Richard Marvin reunites for the fourth time with Director Jonathan Mostow for the sci-fi thriller "Surrogates," staring Bruce Willis. Marvin and Mostow teamed up in the past on the WWII drama “U-571,” the thriller “Flight of the Black Angel” and the action/crime film “Breakdown.”

For “Surrogates,” Marvin incorporates over 120 musicians, along with electronic elements, to create an epic dramatic score. His greatest challenge composing this score was maintaining the human emotion and isolation portrayed in the film.

The score is available now through Lakeshore Records on iTunes and Amazon Digital and will be in stores November 24.

“Surrogates” describes a near future where humans live in isolation and only interact through robotic bodies that serve as surrogates. When several humans are murdered after their surrogates are destroyed, a cop (Willis) investigates the crimes through his own surrogate. After a near fatal encounter, the cop's surrogate is destroyed and forces him to bring his human form out of isolation and unravel a conspiracy behind the crimes.

Marvin went to school at Indiana University Bloomington, majoring in Jazz Piano. After just two years in Los Angeles, he became a top studio pianist and was playing for composers: Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams and Maurice Jarre.

In addition to scoring "Surrogates," Marvin worked closely with director Curtis Hanson to write the music for the new dramatic CBS’ series "Three Rivers." He has also written music for HBO’s “In Treatment” and “Six Feet Under,” as well as the WB’s “The OC,” CBS’ “Without A Trace” and Showtime’s “Dead Like Me.” Marvin has over 100 feature film and TV episodes to his credit. He began his TV composing career working with Mike Post on the classic shows “The A-Team” and “Hardcastle & McCormick.” Marvin’s upcoming projects include the documentary “Street Dogs of South Central” and the comedy “A Fork in the Road.”

A reinvention loosely based upon the George Romero classic of the same name, The Crazies is about the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.

The industry rejects DANNY ELFMAN's symphonic score for "WOLFMAN"

It seems that - despite the fact that for the time being it's still presented as a "schedule conflict" event, Elfman's "by all accounts traditional, grandly gothic effort a la Kilar’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula." [as presented in the original article which i am linking to below] sounded too old-fashioned to someone's ears.

So, they decided that the movie would benefit more from what's possibly going to turn around as a cliched, dark and moody electronic-driven score with some guitars here and there, a la usual Paul Haslinger. That, in the best of cases or otherwise - plain noise.

Atli Örvarsson's "THE FOURTH KIND" [CD]

In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind.

The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document … until now.

Structured unlike any film before it, THE FOURTH KIND is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where — mysteriously since the 1960s — a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.
Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.
Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, THE FOURTH KIND exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

The thrilling and supernatural score is by Atli Örvarsson.

GABRIEL YARED's "AMELIA" [CD]

One of the most anticipated films of the fall, Fox Searchlight’s Amelia is already being touted as a major award contender.

Amelia stars two-time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart, the legendary aviatrix and enigmatic symbol of the American free spirit, who was guided by a profound curiosity for everything life had to offer. Earhart’s early aviation triumphs and meteoric rise to fame and fortune were propelled along by her tempestuous partnership and eventual marriage to publisher George Putnam (Richard Gere). Bound by mutual ambition, admiration and ultimately a great love, their bond could not be broken even with her brief passionate affair with Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor).
Ms. Earhart was the first woman to solo the Atlantic and was the first pilot, man or woman, to fly unaccompanied across the Pacific. In Amelia’s attempt to be the first to fly around the world in an equatorial flight, her life was tragically cut short with her mysterious and untimely disappearance over the South Pacific in 1937.

The soaring score is by the Academy Award-winning composer Gabriel Yared (The English Patient).
