EDWARD SHEARMUR - mother and child [cd]

This just in from varese..

MOTHER AND CHILD
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by Edward Shearmur

Naomi Watts
Annette Bening
Kerry Washington
Jimmy Smits
and Samuel L. Jackson

Writer/director Rodrigo García (Nine Lives) teams with executive producer Alejandro González Iñárritu to craft MOTHER AND CHILD, a drama highlighting the powerful bond between a mother and her son. It's been years since Karen (Annette Bening) gave her daughter, Elizabeth, up for adoption, and the decision to abandon her child has always haunted her. Upon meeting laid-back Paco (Jimmy Smits), Karen permits her anxiety and mistrust to get the best of her. On the surface it appears that Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) is none the worse for never knowing her biological mother; she's a fast-talking lawyer who's just landed a high-profile job at a firm fronted by Paul (Samuel L. Jackson), though her unsavory penchant for exploiting others is about to blow up in her face.

Composer Edward Shearmur, known for his scores for Reign Of Fire, Charlie’s Angels and Miss Congeniality, proves equally adept at providing a sympathetic and touching musical palette for MOTHER AND CHILD.

MOTHER AND CHILD made its US premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics will start its theatrical rollout May 7.

MARC STREITENFIELD - ROBIN HOOD coming on CD

Just in from varese:

ROBIN HOOD
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music Composed by Marc Streitenfeld

Academy Award Winner Russell Crowe
Academy Award Winner Cate Blanchett

Oscar® winner Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as Robin Hood, whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar® winner Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

Director Ridley Scott, whose Gladiator brought a contemporary spin to the world of ancient Rome, takes a similar turn with the Robin Hood legend, with a striking new score by Marc Streitenfeld, who also collaborated on the director’s Body Of Lies and American Gangster.

Kicking off the Summer blockbuster season, Universal Pictures will open ROBIN HOOD on over 3500 screens on May 14.

Plot: Burke Ryan (Aaron Eckhart), is a successful Ph.D. and author of a self-help book that gives advice about dealing with the loss of a loved one. He writes the book after his wife dies in a car accident as a way to deal with the grief. While giving a workshop in Seattle, where his wife was from, he meets Eloise (Jennifer Aniston), a woman who works as a florist. It seems, however, that Burke has not been following his own advice, and in fact has not been dealing with the loss of his wife. In the end, he confesses to an audience that he was driving the car, and not his wife, as he previously maintained. Due to this, he blames himself for her death. Eloise, along with his wife's father, (Martin Sheen), help Burke move past his wife's death.

International Recording Artist Zera Vaughan - Shines with Vision and Vibe on “The New Seed” Artist Donates Song to Greenpeace

It is becoming more and more common for singer/songwriters and film composers to collaborate on music together. French film composer Cyril Morin produced, arranged and performed on singer/songwriter Zera Vaughan’s “The New Seed.” Cyril has composed almost 60 soundtracks and many albums where he blends and mixes versatile sources of inspiration with the project he is working on. The collaboration of two individuals, with such diverse backgrounds within music, produces an outcome that’s synergistic energy can not be replicated. Thus is the outcome of Zera Vaughan’s “The New Seed.”

Full press release as follows:
Poetic, hypnotic and transcendent: The New Seed from singer/songwriter Zera Vaughan is a rich sonic tapestry of electronic beats and transfixing melodies. Created with the noted French producer/composer Cyril Morin and featuring international musicians, the spacious sound is a sparkling showcase for Vaughan’s confiding vocals. In Hebrew, the word “zera” signifies “seed,” which inspired the title The New Seed. It is against a soundscape of harmony and hope that Zera Vaughan imagines an exquisite harvest. Vaughan received a Hollywood Music in Media Award nomination for Best New Age/Ambient Artist for “Release the Chains” from The New Seed. “Empty Spaces,” also on The New Seed, aired on the 18th Episode of the WomensRadio Music Review Podcast (available on iTunes), and Vaughan was chosen as one of WomensRadio’s Hot “Up-N-Comers of 2010.” Recently Vaughan attended the Golden Globes and garnered much attention from the media on the red carpet. The New Seed is available on iTunes, Amazon.com and for film and TV licensing.

Vaughan explains, “The New Seed expresses my concern for the environment; water and air are the most important elements in our existence. We’ve stepped away from respecting the basics in life.” Vaughan is passionate about protecting the planet. All proceeds from sales and licensing of the song “Release the Chains” on The New Seed will be donated to Greenpeace. Vaughan’s CD release concert in Hollywood was also an awareness event for Greenpeace. The CD is packaged in a biodegradable case made from recycled paper and biodegradable ink.

Born to a Tunisian mother and an English father, Vaughan, raised between two cultures, studied classical and Middle Eastern music, opera, and ballet, before she began performing American pop and jazz in clubs. Studies in music at the Paris Music Conservatory and Psychology at the Sorbonne alternated with recording sessions in France. It was on holiday in London that Zera first experienced the orchestral electronic trip hop of Tricky, Portishead and Massive Attack, influences that would become, she says, “building blocks for the music that I had been hearing in my head.”

Norris discovers forces are at work to keep them apart, and he peels the layers to find out why. The action takes place all over Manhattan. One of the scenes, a press conference where Matt Damon (David Norris) will announce his intent to run for the Senate, will take place at Fordham University's Rose Hill campus; his character will be a Fordham alumnus that played basketball while matriculating.

JOHN DEBNEY scores "PREDATORS"

John Debney has been chosen to score the upcoming action horror movie Predators. The movie is directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy, Armored) and stars Topher Grace, Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne. (source: filmmusicreporter).

Predators is an upcoming 2010 science fiction, action and horror film directed by Nimród Antal, and starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo and Derek Mears. The film is a sequel to the 1987 film Predator. Producer Robert Rodriguez stated that he named the film "Predators" in relation to how the second film in the Alien franchise was called Aliens. The title Predators is intended to have a double meaning, in that it refers to both the film's alien creatures, as well as the group of humans that are going against them and in this movie, nine people, predators in their own right, are brought to the Predator home world, what is basically a giant game preserve, and are hunted by the creatures.

SOUND CLIPS from JOHN POWELL's "how to train your dragon" [CD]

How to Train Your Dragon, also known as How to Train Your Dragon 3D, is an upcoming computer-animated film by DreamWorks Animation loosely based on the 2003 book of that same title. The film stars the voice talents of Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Gerard Butler, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Craig Ferguson. The film is scheduled to be released on March 26, 2010. The trailer was shown in front of A Christmas Carol. A second one minute trailer was shown before Avatar. A third trailer was shown before Alice in Wonderland.

Plot

The film is set in a mythical world of Vikings and dragons. The story centers around a viking teenager named Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. The teen’s smarts and offbeat sense of humor is disliked by his tribe and its chief, Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler). However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. After he entangles a dragon with a bolas-shooting cannon, Hiccup releases and ends up befriending the dragon, who he dubs Toothless. This relationship flips his world upside down as he strives to convince his tribe that they don't need to be dragon-slayers.

The score's composer is John Powell (Green Zone) and it's coming on CD from varesesarabande.com

BRUNO COULAIS SCORES 2 NEW WORKS - DISNEYNATURE’S OCEANS AND FOCUS FEATURES’ BABIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COMPOSER OF TWO OF THIS YEAR’S OSCAR® NOMINATED FILMS SCORES TWO ANITCIPATED DOCUMENTARIES – DISNEYNATURE’S OCEANS AND FOCUS FEATURES’ BABIES

LOS ANGELES (March 11, 2010) – The scores of Bruno Coulais are filled with the complexity of international and inanimate sounds that bloom into characters in their own right. Whether writing for a documentary or a kid-friendly animated film, Coulais creates moods and emotions in the absence of actors. On the heels of an Academy award season that saw two of Coulais’ films nominated for Best Animated Feature (CORALINE, THE SECRET OF KELLS), the French composer wrote original scores for two of the year’s highly anticipated documentaries: OCEANS and BABIES.

In Disneynature’s OCEANS (opening Earth Day, April 22), Coulais explores the depths of the seas, its inhabitants and the dangers of the ocean. For Focus Features’ BABIES (opening May 7), he creates a delicate, light, funny and emotional score as the film simultaneously follows the life of four of the world’s newest human beings.

Coualis’ scores are innovative and idiosyncratic with their combination of orchestral pieces, toys, ethnic instruments and children’s voices. Mixing orchestra and adding contrapuntal themes tease additional meanings and emotions from a scene according to Coulais.

Coulais writes the original score and also acts as his own orchestrator. “For me it’s very important to make my own orchestrations because when I think of melody, I think of it with the instruments I’ll write with,” says Coulais. “Depending on the density of sequence, sometimes I will have just a few instruments -- strange instruments like the water phone. It’s a metallic percussion where you put water on a kind of basin with a tube and a bowl. You can play notes on it, and it’s a strange, beautiful, very deep sound.”

An ethereal tone dominates the score to Disneynature’s OCEANS. The documentary offers an unprecedented look beneath the sea, exploring the playful splendor and the harsh reality of the weird and wonderful creatures that live within.

“OCEANS is more than a film. It is a manifest for nature,” Coulais said. To capture the great depth of OCEANS Coulais tries to convey through music how wonderful the world is, but also fragile. Coulais hopes through this film, and his music, the audience will have a greater understanding of how important it is to preserve the splendor of the oceans. His score is written for a full orchestra, a kind of concerto for harp and violin with electronic sounds. His score was recorded in Paris featuring French soloists Marielle Nordmann (harp) and Laurent Korcia (violin); along with the French choir Mikrokosmos.

BABIES is a visually stunning film that simultaneously chronicles the lives of four of the world’s newest human inhabitants – in Mongolia, Namibia, San Francisco and Tokyo, respectively. The joyful documentary follows the babies from first breath to first steps, on a journey at once universal and amazingly original.

“The music of BABIES was written for a very special orchestra that included a lot of toys, a string quintet, wind orchestra, ethnic instruments, piano and percussion,” says Coulais. “The words of the lyrics have no meaning. The vocals sound like the beginning of human language.” Although the cast of BABIES is international, “we didn’t want to adapt the music to the nationality of the babies, but to be universal.” Vocals were recorded by French artist Rosemary.

Coulais’s score to LES CHORISTES earned him an Academy Award-nomination, A BAFTA Award-nomination and won a Cesar Award. Other credits include LUCKY LUKE, VILLA AMALIA and the Academy Award-winning Winged Migration.

AUDIO INTERVIEW with DANNY ELFMAN

Alfred Hitchcock may have had Bernard Herrmann. Francois Truffaut was in tune with Georges Delerue. And Steven Spielberg made beautiful music with John Williams. All of these legendary director-composer collaborations are well and good. But perhaps none can boast of the inspirational insanity that’s possessed the thirteen feature films and twenty-five years that Danny Elfman and Tim Burton have fed off each other’s fine madness.

MYCHAEL DANNA's "chloe" [CD]

Mychael Danna's score for "CHLOE" getting released.

Chloe is a 2009 erotic thriller directed by Atom Egoyan, and starring Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Nina Dobrev, and Max Thieriot. The screenplay was written by Erin Cressida Wilson, based on the film, Nathalie..., written by Anne Fontaine.

StudioCanal fully financed this film, which had already made its budget back via international pre-sales. This film's United States distribution rights had also been acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, which will release this film in the United States theatrically through Sony Pictures Classics; the film is receiving a limited theatrical release in the United States and Canada on March 26, 2010.

Catherine (Julianne Moore) and David Stewart (Liam Neeson) are married and have good jobs and a 17-year-old son, Michael (Max Thieriot), and live in Toronto, Ontario. David misses a flight home from New York and, as a result, a surprise party that Catherine has organized for him, and cryptically says that this was neither an accident nor on purpose. He tends to be friendly to female students and service personnel. Catherine suspects that he is having an affair.

A young call girl named Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) arranges what seems to be a chance encounter with Catherine in a hotel bathroom. Catherine hires Chloe to test David's fidelity and report back to her, but Catherine fails to instruct Chloe how far she is supposed to go if David wants to have sex. Catherine and Chloe meet repeatedly. The first time Chloe reports that he was just friendly, the second time she reports in detail a sexual encounter. Catherine has mixed feelings about the tests and tells Chloe to stop. However, Chloe continues to report encounters, Catherine continues to pay her, and she and Catherine also have sex together, which seems to have been Chloe's goal. However, she stalks Catherine with a visit to her work and an email with a photograph of the two in bed. It turns out that she made up the encounters with David. Catherine tells her to get out of her life. However, she has also sex with Michael in the parents' bed in Catherine's house, apparently in order to keep invading Catherine's life and be close to her. Catherine tells her to leave the house, which in turn upsets Michael. In a confrontation with Catherine, Chloe falls out of a window, and with a mysterious smile on her face, falls to her death.

Upcoming MOVIESCORE MEDIA releases.

Here's a short list and descriptions of upcoming MovieScore Media releases, as quoted by the label's head, Mikael Carlsson:

HIERRO - Zacarías M. de la Riva
An exquisite, serious orchestral score from the composer of "Imago Mortis" (which received an IFMCA nomination!). Beautiful piano themes, colourful writing primarily for strings, some Penderecki influences... this is the kind of score that goes between tension and release in that very emotionally rewarding way!

SHIVER - Fernando Velazquez
This is a large orchestral horror score in the "gothic" tradition, written for the Spanish horror film "Escalofrio". Velazquez came to international prominence with his music for "The Orphanage," and "Shiver" is equally exciting and impressive especially in its extremely colourful orchestrations. (We are in fact working on licencing the rights to more scores by Velazquez who is a fantastic composer.)

UN TICKET POUR L'ESPACE (A Ticket to Space) - Erwann Kermorvant
Big, entertaining sci-fi score which pays big tribute to the Hollywood classics. French composer Kermorvant, whose score for "La premiere etoile" we released as a download last year, has whipped up a truly exciting score for this French comedy, playing the drama and action straight à la Bernstein. Hints of early Horner in the majestic themes, and Goldsmith in the pounding action. Not to be missed. A new entry (finally) in our Discovery Collection!

BIG CITY - Erwann Kermorvant
If you like your western scores big and sparkling, this one is for you. With a nod to Broughton's "Silverado" and of course the classics by Alfred Newman and Dimitri Tiomkin, Kermorvant's score for this French family movie plays like a "real" western score, with a lot of great themes (including a memorable waltz!) and exciting action music.

LES DEUX MONDES - Richard Harvey
This French time-travel adventure comedy featured a real pot-boiler of a score by Richard Harvey ("Luther," "Death of a President," "Animal Farm," "Arabian Nights"). Written for large orchestra and chorus, this epic score makes use of ominous chants, pounding percussion and lots of brass. It has been released as a download only before, but we felt this one really deserves a CD release for collectors to enjoy!

A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch (Claire Foy) to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence.

A priest (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grieving knight (Ulrich Thomsen), an itinerant swindler (Stephen Graham) and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight (Robert Sheehan) join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl.

VARESE to release JAMES NEWTON HOWARD's score for the new "Nanny McPhee" film

NANNY McPHEE & THE BIG BANG
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Music Composed by James Newton Howard

Emma Thompson

In Nanny McPhee & The Big Bang, Oscar®-winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson returns to the role of the magical nanny who appears when she’s needed the most and wanted the least in the next chapter of the hilarious and heartwarming fable that has enchanted children around the world.

In the latest installment, Nanny McPhee appears at the door of a harried young mother, Mrs. Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she’s arrived, Nanny McPhee discovers that Mrs. Green’s children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in and refuse to leave.

Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree-climbing piglet and a baby elephant who turns up in the oddest places, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons.

James Newton Howard, who gave flight to Peter Pan, provides another magical score for choir and orchestra.

Nanny McPhee & The Big Bang begins its European rollout opening in Britain on March 26 and will come to America this August.
