ALEXANDRE DESPLAT nominated for a Golden Globe award for ARGO

Film Composer Alexandre Desplat receives Golden Globe Nomination for ARGO

Desplat’s Sixth Golden Globe nomination
Desplat scores five of the Best Picture nominees

ARGO-The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Available Now on WaterTower Records

(West Hollywood, CA) December 13, 2012 – Film composer Alexandre Desplat receives Golden Globe nomination for Argo; this marks the composer’s sixth Golden Globe nomination with one win. Desplat also scored this year, five of the Best Picture nominees in various categories. Desplat said from his studio in Paris, “It is an honor to be nominated again by the HFPA. Writing the score for Argo was a rare experience. I wish to thank Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Chay Carter for taking me on-board their flight to Iran. I want to share this nomination with the brilliant musicians from all over the world who performed on my score.” In addition to best score, Argo received five nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best screenplay; Ben Affleck directed film Argo.

The film's director Ben Affleck said, “We needed to find a theme that we would use throughout—obviously different instrumentation and tempo, but still the same piece of music." He turned to composer Alexandre Desplat. "Desplat was amazing at crafting an atypical score, incorporating uncommon instruments, many Middle Eastern in origin. It doesn’t feel too literal or cliché, but he created a sound that instantly puts you in that place.”

A four-time Academy Award® nominee, Desplat received his most recent Oscar® nod for his score for the Best Picture winner “The King’s Speech,” for which he also won a BAFTA Award and earned a Golden Globe nomination. He previously garnered Oscar® and BAFTA Award nominations for his score for the animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox”; Oscar®, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations for David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”; and Oscar® and BAFTA Award nominations for Stephen Frears’ “The Queen.” In addition, Desplat won a Golden Globe Award for John Curran’s “The Painted Veil,” and also received Golden Globe nominations for his scores for Stephen Gaghan’s “Syriana” and Peter Webber’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring.”

Desplat more recently created the scores for many films this year including “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Zero Dark Thirty,“ “Rise of the Guardians, and "Rust and Bone" - all Golden Globe nominated this year! Last year’s credits include "The Tree of Life,” directed by Terrence Malick; George Clooney’s “The Ides of March”; “Carnage,” which reunited him with Roman Polanski; Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”; and the two-film finale of the Harry Potter film franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Parts 1 and 2.”

Oscar® winner Ben Affleck (“The Town,” “Good Will Hunting”) directs and stars in “Argo.” Based on real events, the dramatic thriller “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis, focusing on the little-known role that the CIA and Hollywood played—information that was not declassified until many years after the event. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top “exfiltration” specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

MovieScore Media surprises with another gorgeous and unknown gem: 90 MINUTES, by HENRIK SKRAM

90 MINUTES (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Music Composed by HENRIK SKRAM
Release date (digital only): December 11, 2012

It wouldn't be the first time MovieScore Media releases a completely wonderful score by an unknown composer, as is practically what the label specializes at. If you want my advice, do not pass on this one. It's beautiful. Up there with Zbigniew Preisner's mesmerizing waltzes and musical fields, or the beautiful themes of Jan A.P.Kaczmarek, this is yet another small orchestral (with emphasis on piano and strings) gem by MovieScore Media. Chamber-musical and melancholic, it's a must-listen for this year.

Go over MSM's site and listen for yourselves! http://moviescoremedia.com/90-minutes-henrik-skram/

Beautifully crafted by newcomer Henrik Skram and performed with great sensibility by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the original score for Norwegian drama 90 Minutes (starring Aksel Hennie of Max Manus fame) is a mesmerizing listening experience where transparent writing for strings and melodic piano themes form the backbone of the soundtrack.

“Johan’s Theme and Variations” features in five versions throughout the album and is in its most clean version a nostalgic and elegant waltz for piano, plucked strings and harp that has an instant appeal akin to that of the melodic writing of such film music greats as Gabriel Yared and Zbigniew Preisner. MovieScore Media’s digital album also features a new recording of Puccini’s famous aria, ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’, featuring soprano Eszter Magyari.

Darren Aronofsky Confirms Clint Mansell Is Scoring 'Noah,' Discusses Their Working Relationship

NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAU:

Considering composer Clint Mansell has worked with Darren Aronofsky on all of the director's films to date, it's not a big shock that they will be working together once again. But still, it's nice to get some confirmation, and indeed, during a masterclass at the Marrakech Film Festival Aronofsky confirmed that Mansell will be back for his Bible epic "Noah." But perhaps most revealing is Aronofsky's description of their working relationship.

Listen to a newly-surfaced project by VANGELIS: The Tegos Tapes / Case

Dr. Stergios Tegos & Vangelis -Microneurosurgery Soundtrack, you can listen to it here.

As we learn from various sources in the net (and most notably emportal.info):

Around a year ago, Christmas last year, a Vangelis collector Don Fenimore (uncledon) confirmed the existence of a medical book & 3 x 3.5 hours video tapes with ~ 11 hours of Vangelis music. The mysterious project was listed some time ago on the EMI websites simply as Tegos Case 1-35, no other info.

Preamble
Dr. Stergios Tegos video recorded 35 Microneurosurgery procedures between '91-'98 for a medical book. The videos were totally silent with no medical instruments noises or any other sound effects, no surrounding environment, just close ups of the surgery areas. So he asked Vangelis to compose some background music which he did, almost 12 hours worth. The Box/book/tapes package was released in 1998 and sold through specialized Medical outlets & like on Silent Portraits, Vangelis is not credited on the cover keeping his contribution undetected.

The print is on high quality paper and two column format Greek/English.

Goodies
The Video tapes are in PAL format with very good Stereo audio, image quality is also excellent for a tape although not something for most of us to watch...Each "Case" ranges from 10-28 minutes with it's own unique soundtrack, Dr. Tegos does explain in Greek something about what he does in 20-50 seconds bursts, the rest is clean music. Since the tracks are so long it's quite feasible to extract a lot of meaningful audio by deleting the commentaries/crossfading or backfilling the gaps with cloned sections resulting in ~ 8 hours of music.

The music came as an unbelievable surprise, this is Vangelis like we never heard before, very long tracks, all slow matching the surgery video with occasional distant percussion, and, hours of it.

The sounds seem to come from all of his releases excluding the RCA years, from L'apocalypse des animaux right through Invisible Connections, Voices, The City, less the bombastic sounds.

All compositions are atmospheric ranging from Steve Roach cosmic to ambient, to slow classical to Invisible connections sparseness filled with sounds from The City, yet there is not a single minute sounding like anything he released on record. At long last, I think this is Vangelis in his experimental (yet polished) form, maybe this is how he composes- long pieces and what we get to hear are polished extracts with melodies on top...As usual with Vangelis, we find more about him from those around him, see the acknowledgement section..

Now you can listen to a large portion of that music here.

JASON GRAVES is the new Tomb Raider composer.

BAFTA award winner profiled in latest episode of
The Final Hours of TOMB RAIDER

SQUARE ENIX and Crystal Dynamics today announced that Jason Graves, an award winning composer with an outstanding pedigree across film, television and gaming is penning the original score for TOMB RAIDER.

MARCO BELTRAMI WINS “BEST ORIGINAL SCORE- FEATURE FILM” for 'THE SESSIONS' at Hollywood Music in Media Awards 2012

MARCO BELTRAMI WINS “BEST ORIGINAL SCORE- FEATURE FILM”

FOR THE SESSIONS AT THE HOLLYWOOD MUSIC IN MEDIA AWARDS

Soundtrack (Lakeshore Records) Features Original Music by Marco Beltrami

(West Hollywood, CA) November 16, 2012— Two- time Academy-Award® nominee Marco Beltrami, the composer of the recent Clint Eastwood film Trouble with the Curve, was honored with Best Original Score- Feature Film for Fox Searchlight's The Sessions at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards on November 15, 2012 at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Beltrami won over an impressive list of fellow nominees including Alexandre Desplat, John Williams, and Thomas Newman.

The Sessions tells the story of a man who lived most of his life in an iron lung who is determined - at age 38 - to lose his virginity. Beltrami created an intimate and classically oriented score. He incorporated meditative elements to embody the spirit of the story, including playing the rims of crystal bowls. The Sessions – The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Lakeshore Records is available digitally now and in stores.

About Marco Beltrami

Award winning composer Marco Beltrami established an early reputation as a genre innovator with non-traditional horror scores for the Scream franchise, Hellboy, Blade II and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Upon completing undergraduate studies at Brown University, Marco Beltrami entered the Yale School of Music on a scholarship. His pursuit of music composition then lead him to Venice for a period of study with the Italian master, Luigi Nono and then finally to Los Angeles to undertake a fellowship with Academy Award® -winning composer, Jerry Goldsmith.

Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, Marco Beltrami landed Wes Craven’s Scream. After Scream, he went on to write his critically acclaimed score for Guillermo Del Toro’s Mimic. This was the first of several collaborations with Del Toro, including Hellboy and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Beltrami’s musical palette has since expanded to virtually all film genres. Beltrami has received two Academy Award nominations for Best Score. First, for 3:10 To Yuma, starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, and shortly after for his score to the Academy Award winning film for Best Picture, The Hurt Locker. Beltrami’s score for Soul Surfer won the 2012 Satellite Awards for Best Film Score of The Year. His most recent project is Trouble with the Curve starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams. Beltrami has lent his musical voice to such unique hit films as Live Free or Die Hard, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Knowing and I, Robot. His recent scores include The Woman in Black, The Thing, and Deadfall.

About the Film

Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California–based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien (Academy Award® nominee John Hawkes), The Sessions tells the story of a man who lived most of his life in an iron lung who is determined - at age 38 - to lose his virginity.   With the help of his therapist (Academy Award® winner Helen Hunt) and the guidance of his priest (Academy Award® nominee William H. Macy), he sets out to make his dream a reality.

Amazon dot com says:

Original music score from Grammy Award and multiple Emmy Award winning composer Brian Keane for the Ric Burns directed film 'Death and the Civil War'. Premieres on September 18 (from 8:00 PM 10:00 Pm EST) nationally on the PBS network as part of the American Experience in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam to this day, the single bloodiest day in American history.

'Death and the Civil War' explores an essential but largely overlooked aspect of the most pivotal event in American history: the transformation of the nation by the death of an estimated 750,000 men nearly two and a half percent of the population in four dark and searing years from 1861 to 1865.

The work of contending with death on this scale would propel extraordinary changes in the inner and outer life of all Americans posing challenges for which there were no ready answers when the war began challenges that called forth remarkable and eventually heroic efforts on the parts of individuals, groups, and the government as Americans worked to improvise new solutions, new institutions, new ways of coping with death on an unimaginable scale.

Before the Civil War, there were no national cemeteries in America. No provisions for identifying the dead, or for notifying the next of kin, or for providing aid to the suffering families of dead veterans. No federal relief organizations, no effective ambulance corps, no adequate federal hospitals, no federal provisions for burying the dead. No Arlington Cemetery. No Memorial Day.

Brian Keane's score in both composition and production are as dramatic as the film itself. With grand but delicate orchestral gestures, Keane drives the film with deep reverence and respect for this solemn portion of our American history.

Amazon says:

Over the last 40 years video games have become a critical form of entertainment throughout the world. As the games have grown to be more sophisticated and realistic, video game music has also evolved; from the simple bleeps of arcade shoot-em-ups to today's robust orchestrations, written for complex action or adventure titles on platforms like Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo.
Consequently, classical music has made an entrance into the realm of gaming. Last year's collaboration with London Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Andrew Skeet resulted in The Greatest Video Game Music, an album featuring classical renditions of the most beloved video games.

Responding to the popularity and the massive feedback to The Greatest Video Game Music a sequel was recorded. This time having fans from all over the world vote for their favorite video game theme. These themes were once again performed by The London Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most reputable orchestras in the world, and conducted by sensational Andrew Skeet. The Greatest Video Game Music 2 is the fruit of two worlds blended together.

ANGELO BADALAMENTI - a late quatet

Note from the composer:
Scoring Yaron Zilbermans A Late Quartet was an appealing and challenging musical opportunity. At first, I was drawn to the tremendous cast who were so obviously capable of delivering the well-wrought screenplay. But there was more to it than that. The film is about the members of a world-renowned string quartet, and how their personal and work relationships develop as they prepare for an upcoming anniversary concert. Here was a story I could relate to; my life is a musical life. As the story unfolds, we learn of static within the ensemble love, sickness, insecurity, betrayal, and personal growth. Its a story about their interconnected lives. But Yaron Zilbermans film is about Beethovens masterpiece as much as its about the experiences of the players who interpret it. They are equals. The everyday lives of these four musicians (The Fugue) are steeped in this music.

They are constantly striving to live up to the greatness of the work.
Upon viewing the first cut, I met with Yaron and asked for his feelings on what the score should evoke. He simply said three words, Pain, pain and pain. I replied, I can give you pain together with understated beauty. From the outset we were on the same page. I composed several themes and a fugue to help serve the drama, and to complement the classical pieces we hear in the film. As a counterbalance to the on-screen string quartet, I came up with the idea of enhancing the score with woodwinds. To me, these instruments would represent the individual voices of our characters but in an abstract way. Yaron thinks of the winds as the souls of our characters and I like that very much. It was a joy to be a part of the creative team on A Late Quartet, to work with Yaron and watch him deliver this profound musical drama to audiences around the world.

LAKESHORE RECORDS TO RELEASE SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

Features Original Music by Carter Burwell

(October 15, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the Seven Psychopaths – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 23rd and in stores on November 20th , 2012. The album features original music by Carter Burwell (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2, Burn After Reading).

“The score to Seven Psychopaths tries to accomplish two things, primarily,” said Burwell. “One is to make the characters as human and sympathetic as possible - or as one can make characters in a film titled Seven Psychopaths. Because the reality of the story and of the characters is so often subverted and reframed, it seemed a worthy challenge to draw the audience into the characters' own hearts and minds and emphasize their emotional reality.”

Carter Burwell graduated from Harvard College. While at Harvard, he studied animation with Mary Beams and George Griffin, electronic music with Ivan Tcherepnin and pursued a course of independent study at the MIT Media Lab (then known as the Architecture Machine Group). In the early 80s, he worked at the New York Institute of Technology where he began as a computer modeler and animator, but ended up as Director of Digital Sound Research. During this time, he worked on many computer-animated television spots and films, ultimately contributing models and animation to the Japanese anime Lensman.

At the same time, Burwell pursued a parallel career in music, playing with a number of bands in New York City, particularly The Same, Thick Pigeon, and Radiante. He was also writing music for dance, theatre and film. His first film works included the Coen Brothers first feature, Blood Simple. This lead to a twenty year collaboration on such films as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, The Hudsucker Proxy, O Brother Where Art Thou? and No Country for Old Men. Burwell’s credits also include Being John Malkovich, Before Night Falls, Velvet Goldmine, The Spanish Prisoner, Three Kings, The Kids Are Alright, True Grit, the HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce, and several films in the Twilight series including Twilight, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Part 2.
“The other important goal for the score was to make the ending of the story redemptive,” Burwell explained. “Thus the musical theme that is used for The Quaker and The Vietnamese Priest does evolve in the end into the theme I called Redemption. And hopefully the audience perceives this redemption as real and truly felt.”

Written and directed by Oscar®-winner Martin McDonagh, the comedy Seven Psychopaths follows a struggling screenwriter (Colin Farrell) who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends (Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell) kidnap a gangster’s (Woody Harrelson) beloved Shih Tzu. Co-starring Abbie Cornish, Tom Waits, Olga Kurylenko and Zeljko Ivanek.

CBS Films presents Seven Psychopaths in theaters on October 12th, 2012. Seven Psychopaths – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Lakeshore Records will be available digitally on October 23rd and in stores on November 20th, 2012.
