‘Eat, Pray, Love’ gets Dario Marianelli score

Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, will be scored by Dario Marianelli, the Academy Award-winning composer of Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, The Brothers Grimm, The Soloist and the current Agora and Everybody’s Fine. The film, which tells the story of a woman who embarks on a journey around the world when she realizes that she needs a change of direction in life, stars Julia Roberts, James Franco, Javier Bardem and Viola Davis and is produced by Columbia Pictures for release next year.

MARCELO ZARVOS scores "Beastly"

According to the Gorfaine Schwartz Agency composer Marcelo Zarvos is assigned to score Beastly.

Beastly is an upcoming 2010 fantasy romance feature film, based on Alex Flinn's 2007 novel of the same name. Written and directed by Daniel Barnz, the film stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Gay Hamilton.

The plot focuses on Kyle Kingson, a handsome man with an evil streak, who ditches a classmate who is a witch in disguise during an environmental bash. The witch, then, casts a spell on Kyle and physically transforms him into a grotesque monster. However, in order to reverse the spell, he needs to be kissed by someone whom he loves sincerely, and likewise to that person. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name which is also a homage to the original story of Beauty and the Beast. However, the film and the novel both take place in the modern times, set in New York City (although filmed in Montreal).


Kyle Kingson (Alex Pettyfer) has it all – looks, intelligence, wealth and opportunity – and a wicked cruel streak. Prone to mocking and humiliating “aggressively unattractive” classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra Hilferty (Mary Kate Olsen), inviting her to the school’s extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion. She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognizable appearance he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is – a task he considers impossible. Repulsed by his appearance, Kyle’s callous father (Peter Krause) banishes him to Brooklyn with a sympathetic housekeeper (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and blind tutor (Neil Patrick Harris).

As Kyle ponders how to overcome the curse and get his old life back, he chances upon a drug addict in the act of killing a threatening dealer. Seizing the opportunity, Kyle promises the addict freedom and safety for his daughter, Linda Taylor (Vanessa Hudgens) if she will consent to live in Kyle’s Brooklyn home. Thus begins Kyle’s journey to discover true love in this hyper-modern retelling of the classic “Beauty and the Beast” story.

Polanski’s ‘Ghost’ scored by Alexandre Desplat

R.P. Productions, the film company run by Roman Polanski, has confirmed to MovieScore Magazine that French composer Alexandre Desplat is doing the original score for Polanski’s new film, The Ghost. The film is currently in post-production, but it remains unclear if the film will be delayed or not as a result of the recent arrest of Polanski in Switzerland. According to various sources, Desplat is among the individuals who signed a petition organized by Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques to set the famous 76-year old director free (Polanski is imprisoned in Switzerland on a 31-year-old U.S. charge of child rape).

Nick Glennie-Smith to score ‘Secretariat’

Walt Disney Pictures has confirmed to MovieScore Magazine that Nick Glennie-Smith has been tapped to compose the original music for the studio’s upcoming racehorse drama Secretariat, directed by Randall Wallace and starring Diane Lane, John Malkovich and Scott Glenn. It is Glennie-Smith’s first Hollywood film as the main composer on a movie since Peter Hyams’ A Sound of Thunder in 2005.

Secretariat is an American motion picture currently in pre-production for Mayhem Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures. The film tells the story of the United States' Hall of Fame racehorse, Secretariat, who, along with Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978) going into 2010, is one of three horses in the past thirty-six years to have won the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The story centers around three people, Penny Chenery, Ron Turcotte, and Lucien Laurin, who come together as, respectively, the principal owner, jockey, and trainer of the legendary horse.

It is being directed by Randall Wallace. Currently casting, on June 12, 2009, Variety magazine reported that Diane Lane will portray Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery.

Carter Burwell scores "THE BLIND SIDE"

Composer Carter Burwell continues his working relationship with director John Lee Hancock, whose previous features The Alamo and The Rookie both featured scores by the New York-based composer who is best known for his numerous scores for the films of the Coen brothers, and for last year’s score to the massive hit Twilight. Hancock’s and Burwell’s new film is entitled The Blind Side and, just like The Rookie, it’s an underdog sports movie.

JAN A.P. KACZMAREK scores "GET LOW"

Polish composer Jan A.P.Kaczmarek, whose scores have mostly gone from brilliant (in the near past) to semi-interesting rides, is into yet another US assignment, and we're all hoping for a soon to come inspirational musical resurrection.

As Mikael Carlsson's moviescoremagazine has been reporting, the composer has written the original score for Get Low, a drama from director Aaron Schneider (Two Soldiers) which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Award winning composer George S. Clinton used unique elements to create his original score for the new Mike Judge film Extract. Clinton is best-known for his scores to the Austin Powers series, Red Shoe Diaries and last year's hit comedy Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. He demonstrated that his abilities transcend genre by receiving an Emmy nomination last year for his Americana and Native American inspired score for Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. For the comedy Extract, Clinton incorporates unique percussion, a chamber orchestra and a "wind" section that actually performed on "Extract" bottles.

Film Opens In Select Theaters September 4



(Hollywood, CA) Award-winning composer GEORGE S. CLINTON scores writer/director Mike Judge’s (Office Space/King of the Hill) comedy EXTRACT, starring Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis and Ben Affleck. EXTRACT opens in select theatres September 4.



For EXTRACT, Clinton recorded a quirky and playful score to compliment the comedic style of the film. He used a small ensemble including guitar, mandolin, solo cello, pedal steel, and various percussion (also including the sounds of people playing actual extract bottles). The score was augmented by a chamber size string orchestra.



EXTRACT is a comedy about a flower-extract plant owner contending with an avalanche of personal and professional problems such as his potentially unfaithful wife and employees who want to take advantage of him.



Recently, Clinton reunited with director Michael Lembeck (Santa Clause 2 & 3) for the comical-fantasy TOOTH FAIRY, starring Dwayne Johnson, Julie Andrews, Billy Crystal and Ashley Judd. TOOTH FAIRY will be in theatres February 2010. Last year, Clinton scored the comedies HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO and THE LOVE GURU. Clinton’s other credits range from such diverse films as the romantic Zalman King's RED SHOE DIARIES, the martial arts fantasy MORTAL KOMBAT, the suspenseful thriller THE ASTRONAUT’S WIFE and the sexy thriller WILD THINGS. Clinton's musical innovation and versatility has allowed him to create memorable scores for various genres. MARK ISHAM: Fame

Fame is an upcoming 2009 American musical film which is a loose remake of the 1980 film of the same title. It was directed by Kevin Tancharoen and written by Allison Burnett. It is scheduled to be released on September 25, 2009.

The remake of the 1980 megahit Fame will feature original score music by Mark Isham, the composer and jazz musician who is best known for his music for Crash, Quiz Show and Blade.

BRIAN TYLER to score "LAW ABIDING CITIZEN"

According to the Gorfaine-Schwartz Agency, Brian Tyler is attached to F. Gary Gray's thriller Law Abiding Citizen, starring Gerard Butler, Michael Gambon, Jamie Foxx, Leslie Bibb and Christian Stolte. Gray previously worked with composers Anne Dudley (American History X, A Man Apart) and John Powell (The Italian Job, Be Cool); Law Abiding Citizen is his first with Brian Tyler.

Law Abiding Citizen is an upcoming drama/thriller film that takes place in Philadelphia and will be released on March 26, 2010

In this movie, an everyday guy (Gerald Butler) decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets his family's killers free. Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky is directed by Jan Kounen and comes September 2009. The story is as follows:

Paris 1913. Coco Chanel is infatuated with the rich and handsome Boy Capel, but she is also compelled by her work. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is about to be performed. The revolutionary dissonances of Igor's work parallel Coco's radical ideas. She wants to democratize women's fashion; he wants to redefine musical taste. ALEXANDRE DESPLAT to score the sequel to "TWILIGHT", called "NEW MOON"

According to Carter Burwell, the composer who has scored the previous teenage vampire p$$n movie, Twilight, he won't be returning to the scoring duties for the 2nd movie in the franchise, but french composer of the Curious case of Benjamin Button - Alexandre Desplat, will instead.

New Moon (also known as The Twilight Saga: New Moon or Twilight 2) is an upcoming romantic-fantasy film scheduled for release on November 20, 2009. It is based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer and is the sequel to 2008's Twilight, which is based on Meyer's previous novel. Directed by Chris Weitz, the film will star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively. Melissa Rosenberg returns as the screenwriter for the film. She handed in a draft of the film script during the opening weekend of Twilight. Summit Entertainment greenlit the sequel in late November 2008, following the early success of Twilight.

MARCO BELTRAMI to score WES CRAVEN's 25/8

42 year old American master of modern horror film music, Marco Beltrami, returns right after the recent and very successful film score for The Knowing, with another new assignment.

This time is 25/8, as confirmed by the Sci-fi Wire.

25/8 is an upcoming 2009 horror/thriller film, written and directed by Wes Craven. This is the first film since 1994’s New Nightmare that he will both write and direct. It tells the story of a dead serial murderer who returns from the grave to kill the seven children who were born on the day he was killed fifteen years ago.
