ALEXANDRE DESPLAT's "THE GHOSTWRITER" , the score for the award-winning Roman Polanski film, on [CD]

The Ghost Writer (aka The Ghost in the UK) is a film adaptation of the Robert Harris novel The Ghost. The film is directed by Roman Polanski and based on a screenplay written by Harris and Polanski.

It stars Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan.

On his way to the Zurich Film Festival, Polanski was arrested by Swiss police in September 2009. Due to Polanski's arrest, post-production was briefly put on hold, but he resumed work from house arrest at his Swiss villa. Also, he could not take part in his film's world premiere at the Berlinale festival on February 12, 2010.

The score is by French composer ALEXANDRE DESPlAT.

THE GHOST WRITER tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghost writer is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang’s wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations. The cast also includes Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh and Tom Wilkinson. THE GHOST WRITER is based on the novel The Ghost written by best-selling author Robert Harris. It won the International Thriller Writers’ Award for best novel of 2008. Harris joined director Roman Polanski in adapting the book for the big screen.

Academy Award nominee Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) has created a suspenseful and captivating work, which recalls the classic thriller scores of the legendary Bernard Herrmann.

Summit Entertainment opens THE GHOST WRITER nationwide on February 19.

There’s a gift for rich, cinematic melody that seems to be a French birthright, one that such Gallic composers as Georges Delerue to Maurice Jarre have imparted to Hollywood with such scores as “Steel Magnolias” and “Ghost.” And there’s no doubt their successor at imparting American films with lush, magical themes is Alexandre Desplat. The Greek-born composer would have dozens of scores behind him before getting his first English-language outing with the chess drama “The Luzhin Defense,” the first of many art films that came calling for his inventive sense of old-school melody, as his acclaimed and inventively haunting scores for “Girl with the Pearl Earring” and “Birth” would lead Desplat to apply his unique approach to such stalwart American films genres as female-centric comedy (“The Upside of Anger”), political thrillers (“Syriana”), gritty crime drama (“Hostage”), period epics (“The Painted Veil”) and effects-filled fantasy (“The Golden Compass”).

"French composer Alexandre Desplat won the ‘Film Composer of the Year’ award and the ‘Best Original Film Score of the Year’ award for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at the World Soundtrack Awards 2009, which closed the 36th Ghent International Film Festival on Saturday night. A.R. Rahman won the award for ‘Best Original Song Written for Film’ for “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire. Nico Muhly was named the World Soundtrack Academy’s ‘Discovery of the Year’ for his score for The Reader. As announced earlier, Marvin Hamlisch was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The ‘Public Choice Award’ went to Carter Burwell for Twilight, and British composer Christopher Slaski (The Pianotuner of Earthquakes) won the SABAM Award for Best Young European Composer.

The event featured musical performances featuring Hamlisch, Desplat and last year’s ‘Discovery of the Year’ honoree Marc Streitenfeld. The Brussels Philharmonic was conducted by Dirk Brossé, Marvin Hamlisch and Alexandre Desplat."

Alexandre Desplat is for the moment one of the most asked composers in the film industry. He writes music for european and american films. He got his big breakthrough in Hollywood with his score to Peter Webber's The Girl with the Pearl Earing. Since than Desplat has written music for films such as Birth, The Queen, Mr Magorium Wonder Emporium, Largo Winch, Hostage, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Lust Caution and many more. For the Curious Case of Benjamin Button he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and The Oscar for best score. His latest works are The Fantastic Mr Fox and New Moon.

Alexandre Desplat, the popular and busier than ever French composer just got another new project out, this time called Fantastic Mr.Fox.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a 2009 stop motion animated film based on Roald Dahl's book of the same name. It will be produced by Regency Enterprises and Indian Paintbrush, and will be released on 25 November 2009 by 20th Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures. It features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, and Bill Murray. It is the first animated film directed by Wes Anderson, and 20th Century Fox's first stop-motion animated film.

Development began in 2004 as collaboration between Anderson and Henry Selick (who worked with Anderson on the 2004 film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) under Revolution Studios. Revolution folded, Selick left to direct Coraline, and the project moved to Fox Animation Studios. Production began in London in 2007. Anderson chose to record voices outside rather than in a studio. Desplat's much awaited new score for the teenage-loved vampire series will be out November the 24th 2009, through E1 Entertainment and will contain the original score written by the composer for the 2nd installment in the franchise.

Much awaited sequel to the teenage vampire soft-porn franchise, "Twilight", comes this "New Moon" continuation of the first movie, one that was responsible for driving the masses of teenagers around the globe mad. The first not exactly aided by the sleepy Carter Burwell score it had, this new instalment comes with an equally long-awaited (for other reasons though) musical accompaniment by hot-shot French Composer, Alexandre Desplat.

Polanski’s ‘Ghost’ scored by Alexandre Desplat

R.P. Productions, the film company run by Roman Polanski, has confirmed to MovieScore Magazine that French composer Alexandre Desplat is doing the original score for Polanski’s new film, The Ghost. The film is currently in post-production, but it remains unclear if the film will be delayed or not as a result of the recent arrest of Polanski in Switzerland. According to various sources, Desplat is among the individuals who signed a petition organized by Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques to set the famous 76-year old director free (Polanski is imprisoned in Switzerland on a 31-year-old U.S. charge of child rape).

Jarvis Cocker has written three or four songs for the film. The American Cathedral in Paris's choir were also hired to sing a four-line poem in the film.
