WSA / Ghent Film Festival Update: Discovery of the Year Nominees announced

WSA Discovery of the Year nominees announced


The five nominees for the Discovery of the Year Award, via which the World Soundtrack Academy rewards up-and-coming talent from the previous year, have been announced. The award will be granted during the World Soundtrack Awards & Concert on October 20 at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent.Through the Discovery of the Year Award, the WSA aims to reward young, talented composers and encourage them to develop further.


The nominees are:

Brian Byrne – Albert Nobbs

David Wingo – Take Shelter

Fall On Your Sword – Lola Versus, Nobody Walks

Lucas Vidal – The Raven, The Cold Light Of Day, Mientras Duermes

Trevor Morris - Immortals


From huge orchestral scores to minimal ensemble compositions, Brian Byrne has written music for films in many genres. He won the Irish Film and Television Award for his original score for the Irish Sci-Fi comedy Zonad, directed by John Carney. He then scored the indie drama The Good Doctor, starring Orlando Bloom.  He is being recognized for his score to the acclaimed film Albert Nobbs starring Glenn Close.David Wingo is best known in indie-circles for his work in the atmospheric and folky outfit Ola Podrida. For ‘Take Shelter’ he created haunting, yet harmonious music to accompany the images, which made him one of this year’s nominees for a Discovery of the Year Award.


Fall On Your Sword is an award wining music company founded by composers Will Bates and Phil Mossman, who specialise in custom composition to picture for film and advertising. Since their launch in 2009, they have amassed a Cannes Gold Lion and two Clio awards for best music while simultaneously gaining swift recognition in the world of feature length film scoring.  Fall On Your Sword is nominated for their work on behalf of Lola Versus and Nobody Walks.


A native of Spain, Lucas Vidal made history at the Berklee College of Music where he was the youngest student to ever compose and record the score for a feature film with an 80-piece orchestra. In addition to numerous feature films, his impressive resume includes writing a piece for the opening gala of the Boston Ballet, conducing at the Boston Symphony Hall, commercial advertising and video game soundtracks. Vidal has been nominated for his versatile and expressive composing skills for The Raven, The Cold Light Of Day and Mientras Duermes.


The Canadian born Trevor Morris has won two EMMY awards and two GEMINI awards for his compositions on the television productions "The Tudors", "The Borgias" and "The Pillars of the Earth." In 2011 he composed the music for ‘Immortals’, his largest feature film to date.


The winner of this award will get the opportunity to perform at the 13th WSA. At this year’s event, the music of award-winning composer James Newton Howard will be celebrated. Howard is one of the most versatile and respected film music composers currently working in film.  A program of his impressive music will be performed by the renowned Brussels Philharmonic and be accompanied by select film clips. The concert will be conducted by both Howard and Dirk Brossé.



The World Soundtrack Awards, which are taking place for the 12th time this year, are an annual celebration for everyone who loves film music. In addition to the Discovery of the Year Award, there is also an award for the best composer and the best composition (best song and best soundtrack). These prizes are awarded by the World Soundtrack Academy, which is made up of 313 members from the international world of film music. There is also the Public Choice Award, which is elected through the website. Voting is open until 15 September at www.worldsoundtrackacademy.com
