IFMCA announces its 2009 winners for scoring excellence

MICHAEL GIACCHINO’S UP WINS BEST SCORE OF 2009

Michael Giacchino wins the 2009 Score of the Year award from the International Film Music Critics Association for his inventive and nostalgic score for the Disney Pixar film, UP, which also wins Best Original Score for an Animated Feature. Giacchino receives a total of four awards, including Composer of the Year, in part for also writing the Best Original Score to a Fantasy/Science Fiction Feature winner for the JJ Abrams STAR TREK reboot.

Giacchino won the Association’s first Score of the Year award in 2004 for another Pixar film, THE INCREDIBLES.

Christopher Young wins two awards for DRAG ME TO HELL: Original Score for a Horror/Thriller Film and Film Music Compostion of the Year for “Concerto to Hell.” Also receiving two awards is James Peterson for Breakout Composer of the Year and Best Original Score for an Action/Adventure Feature for the mixed martial arts prison movie THE RED CANVAS.

Veteran composer Marvin Hamlisch wins Best Original Score for a Comedy Film for Steven Soderbergh’s THE INFORMANT!, while Polish composer Abel Korzeniowski wins Best Original Score for a Drama Film for director Tom Ford’s debut film, A SINGLE MAN. Rounding out the feature film winners is Armand Amar’s Best Original Score for a Documentary Feature for the French nature documentary HOME.

In other original scoring categories, Bear McCreary who has been nominated for every season of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA wins his first award for Best Original Score for Television for the final season of the SyFy series; and James Hannigan receives the Best Original Score for a Video Game or Interactive Media award for the movie spin-off game for HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE.

Intrada takes its fourth Record Label of the Year award for its continued excellence in soundtrack release, including the long-anticipated, complete release of Alan Silvestri’s 1985 score for BACK TO THE FUTURE this year's Best New Release/Re-Release of an Existing Score winner. The Film Score Monthly label takes the Best Film Music Compilation Album or Box Set award for DAVID RAKSIN AT M-G-M and Tadlow label wins the Best Re-Recording of an Existing Score award for its new recording of Ernest Gold’s EXODUS.

The International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) is an association of online, print and radio journalists who specialize in writing about original film and television music.

JANUARY 29, 2010-- The International Film Music Critics Association announces its list of excellence in musical scoring for 2009 with composer Michael Giacchino receiving nine individual nominations, the most for any composer in a given year since the Association began issuing awards in 2004. Along with multiple mentions for his score to the Disney Pixar movie UP and JJ Abrams’ reinvented STAR TREK, Giacchino receives nominations for his scores to the TV series LOST as well as the documentary EARTH DAYS. Giacchino is also nominated for Composer of the Year along with Alexandre Desplat, James Horner, Christopher Young and Brian Tyler.

Both UP and STAR TREK are nominated for Score of the Year, along with James Horner’s score to the worldwide blockbuster AVATAR and Christopher Young’s score to Sam Raimi’s DRAG ME TO HELL. These film scores are tied with the most nominations this year at four noms each. Alexandre Desplat’s score to THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON rounds out the category.

In the category of Breakout Composer, the Association took notice of scores by up-and-coming composers Henry Jackman (MONSTERS VS ALIENS), Abel Korzeniowski (A SINGLE MAN and BATTLE FOR TERRA), James Peterson (THE RED CANVAS), Clinton Shorter (DISTRICT 9) and Austin Wintory (CAPTAIN ABU RAED, GRACE, MAKE THE YULETIDE GAY).

The nominations by the IMFCA, which has members from around the world, reflect the Association’s global perspective. International nominees include Alejandro Amenábar’s latest movie AGORA with a score by Oscar winner Dario Marianelli; Giuseppe Tornatore’s semi-autobiographical BAARÌA with a score by Ennio Morricone; Australian composer Christopher Gordon’s score to Bruce Beresford’s MAO’S LAST DANCER, about ballet dancer Li Cunxin; as well as the Spanish documentary GARBO: EL ESPÍA with a score by Fernando Velázquez.

The International Film Music Critics will announce the winners of its Sixth Annual Awards on February 26, 2010.

List of eligible scores for OSCAR, 2009

In order to be eligible for the Academy Awards, a score cannot automatically be considered unless someone (the composer for instance) sends out a "for your consideration" Oscar promo CD of their scores.

Now, the academy awards have always been the most popular awards each year, some calling it a celebration of the cinematic art in the spotlight of the most glamorous worldwide event, others considering it as a highly overrated celebration of the business of Hollywood money, but nevertheless the whole events draws attention, no matter what.

The 'best original score' category however, has been loosing its eligibility year by year, because of a general notion that characterizes their choices and emits characteristics having to do with a lack of knowledge in the field, and draft & quick issuing of the winners, just for filling out with the rest, "more important" categories of the awards. Most importantly, the choices the Academy makes in the 'best original score category' are often laughable as they ommit the truly notable and worthiest scores of the year, often for technical reasons but not alone, and the ones they do finally choose to award are usually not even good scores, or good music for the matter.

This year, things seem to be even worse however. The list of eligible scores for Oscar Consideration suggests that the truly great scores this year aren't eligible once again, and it was a good year for film music. For instance, no Brian Tyler scores at all ("The Killing Room" was a breath of fresh air from Tyler this year, a very good dark score and it should have - at least - been eligible for sure), there are no David Newman scores, no Beltrami's "The knowing", no Harry Potter nor Zimmer's "Angels and Demons", no Brian Eno's the "Lovely Bones", no "Red Canvas" (not released in the US), no Dario Marianelli's excellent score for "Agora" (not released in the US), no Philippe Rombi's beautiful "Un Homme Et Son Chien" (not released in the US), no Ennio Morricone's lyrical orchestral graces of "Baaria" (not released in the US), no "Pope Joan" (not released in the US), not even the exotic "Mao's Last Dancer" (not released in the US), just to name but a few of the omissions.

Apparently only 81 scores have been deemed eligible by AMPAS for the Oscars this year. They are:

Founded in 1988, the European Film Academy now unites more than 2,000 European film professionals with the common aim of promoting Europe’s film culture.

At the Seville European Film Festival the European Film Academy and EFA Productions announced the nominations for the 22nd European Film Awards. At the same time, the new EFA-website with lots of information about the Awards went online at www.europeanfilmawards.eu

"French composer Alexandre Desplat won the ‘Film Composer of the Year’ award and the ‘Best Original Film Score of the Year’ award for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at the World Soundtrack Awards 2009, which closed the 36th Ghent International Film Festival on Saturday night. A.R. Rahman won the award for ‘Best Original Song Written for Film’ for “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire. Nico Muhly was named the World Soundtrack Academy’s ‘Discovery of the Year’ for his score for The Reader. As announced earlier, Marvin Hamlisch was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The ‘Public Choice Award’ went to Carter Burwell for Twilight, and British composer Christopher Slaski (The Pianotuner of Earthquakes) won the SABAM Award for Best Young European Composer.

The event featured musical performances featuring Hamlisch, Desplat and last year’s ‘Discovery of the Year’ honoree Marc Streitenfeld. The Brussels Philharmonic was conducted by Dirk Brossé, Marvin Hamlisch and Alexandre Desplat."

Elliot Goldenthal to receive Manhattan honour

Academy Award-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal (Frida, Alien 3, Interview with the Vampire) is among a group of four distinguished musicians who will be honoured during an alumni homecoming reception held at the Manhattan School of Music in New York on October 16. Together with trumpet player Joe Wilder, conductor Kenneth Force and soprano Laquita Mitchell, Elliot Goldenthal will be “recognized for their significant career accomplishments as well as for service to Manhattan School of Music.”

Vision Awards to be Held Saturday June 27 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel

Ottman receives Saturn nomination for Best Music - Valkyrie

(Los Angeles, CA) Film editor and composer JOHN OTTMAN will be honored this Saturday with the COMPOSER/EDITOR OF VISION at the 36^th ANNUAL VISION AWARDS. The Vision Awards honor pioneering visionaries in Film, TV, Music, Research, Technology and Leadership. The Awards show will be hosted by Army Archerd with special guest Larry King at the Beverly Hills Wilshire Hotel on Saturday, June 27 (9500 Wilshire Boulevard). Other Honorees include Lawrence Bender-Producer of Vision, Jim Walton-Leader of Vision, Shonda Rhimes-Women of Vision-Entertainment, Diane Ladd and Tom Wilkinson-Film Artists of Vision, Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) Screenwriter of Vision, and Dr. Shalesh Kaushal, MD- Jules Stein Living Tribute Award.

Currently Ottman is scoring ASTRO BOY, the animated, sci-fi/action film starring Nicolas Cage and Kristen Bell. Last year Ottman reteamed with director Bryan Singer as the editor and composer for VALKYRIE. Ottman has edited and scored virtually all of Singer's films, including THE USUAL SUSPECTS, APT PUPIL and SUPERMAN RETURNS. Ottman and Singer first began collaborating while students at USC’s Film School on “Public Access,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival.

Ottman has successfully traversed every genre as a film composer. His wide range of credits include the dark comedy CABLE GUY, the thriller GOTHIKA, CELLULAR and numerous superhero movies including X-MEN 2 &3, FANTASTIC FOUR 1 & 2 and SUPERMAN RETURNS as well as the drama KISS KISS BANG BANG starring Robert Downy Jr. and last years, Sci-fi blockbuster, THE INVASION starring Nicole Kidman. OTTMAN's film scores have earned him a Saturn Award and several BMI Film Music Awards.

John Ottman is nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Music for his score to VALKYRIE, he has won a prestigious BAFTA award in editing for THE USUAL SUSPECTS and a nomination from the A.C.E. (American Cinema Editors).
