REPORT: TYLER BATES scores "THE WATCHMEN" - Photos and article on the recording sessions

American composer of 300, Tyler Bates, is responsible for the musical accompaniment of the long awaited upcoming comic book adaptation, The Watchmen.

Watchmen is an upcoming 2009 American superhero film that adapts Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' 1986 comic book limited series of the same name. Directed by Zack Snyder, the film adaptation stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matthew Goode, Stephen McHattie and Carla Gugino. Set in an alternate 1985, the film follows a group of former vigilantes as tensions heighten between the United States and the Soviet Union. The film began shooting in Vancouver in September 2007 for release on March 6, 2009. As with his previous film 300, Snyder closely modeled his storyboards on the comic, but he chose not to shoot all of Watchmen using chroma key and opted for more sets.

This past fall, as scoringsessions.com reports, he was at the Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros. to record his score for the film where an 87-piece orchestra was used, and ScoringSessions.com was there to report with exclusive photos from the scoring session.

TYLER BATES | The day the earth stood still

Not pretty sure if the earth is going to stand still with Tyler Bates' new release, but last time the controversy over the score to 300 was enough to shake the film music community for a long, long period.

Still, his new assignment is The Day the Earth Stood Still, 20th Century Fox's contemporary reinvention of its 1951 classic.

Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth." Rounding out the cast are Jaden Smith, John Cleese, Jon Hamm, Kyle Chandler and Kathy Bates.

The score is by composer Tyler Bates who is also working on the long-awaited The Watchmen and The Haunted World of El Superbeasto.

Tyler Bates, the American composer behind 300, Doomsday, Rob Zombie's Halloween, Dawn of the Dead and Slither after having created much controversy over the direct lift-offs from Elliot Goldenthal's Titus, used in his 300 score - a story which went the route of justice, returns with his most recent major assignment, The Day the Earth Stood Still.

The 2008 science fiction film, a remake of the 1951 film of the same name is directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Keanu Reeves, dealing with Cold War themes like nuclear warfare updated to more contemporary ones, such as "humans vs. nature" and humanity's generally violent nature towards itself.
