Official (pr): Bear McCreary Launches Record Label and releases new scores (2013)

BEAR MCCREARY ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF A NEW LABEL:
SPARKS & SHADOWS
Upcoming Soundtrack Releases to Include:
Defiance – TV Series and Video Game (SyFy & Trion)
Da Vinci’s Demons (STARZ & BBC)
Europa Report (Magnet)

(April 11, 2013 – Culver City, CA) Composer Bear McCreary announces the launch of Sparks & Shadows, a new boutique record label that will release soundtracks primarily composed by the Emmy-nominated composer.  The first four releases from the label will include two albums for Defiance (the Trion Worlds videogame and the SyFy television series), Da Vinci’s Demons (STARZ, BBC) and the upcoming feature Europa Report (Magnet).  McCreary, listed by Io9 as one of the ten most influential science fiction composers in history, was recently named a “Secret Weapon” by WIRED Magazine.

“I value the soundtrack album experience, because score records are what first led me down the path to becoming a composer,” explained McCreary.  “I was a fan and collector long before I became a professional musician.  I have always looked for ways to deliver my original scores to fans so they can have the same experiences.”

Sparks & Shadows will release two soundtracks of McCreary’s music for the groundbreaking multimedia science fiction epic Defiance, the first attempt to launch a new franchise in both the television and videogame mediums. The game combines the intense action of a third-person shooter, with the persistence and scale of a massive online game, while its television counterpart exudes the sweeping scope and heroic characters of classic science fiction dramas. The videogame album was released digitally on April 2nd.

The Defiance TV series soundtrack album will be available for pre-order late May, and will include both original score and songs. For the collectors, a limited edition combined multi-CD set will be released in late summer, featuring exclusive liner notes and bonus tracks.

McCreary recently collaborated with writer / director David S. Goyer, scoring his historical adventure series Da Vinci’s Demons, which premieres on STARZ on April 12th. The secret history of Leonardo Da Vinci's tantalizing life reveals a portrait of a young man tortured by a gift of superhuman genius. He finds himself in a conflict between truth and lies, religion and reason, past and future. His aspirations are used against him by the opposing forces of the time—luring him into a game of seduction where those who despise his intellect need him most.

McCreary’s sweeping orchestral score was meticulously researched to accurately represent the time period, without being bound to it.  His score combines full orchestra, Renaissance instrumentation, choir and ethnic soloists with the renowned Calder Quartet and surging contemporary synthesis.  Sparks & Shadows will release McCreary’s main title theme for Da Vinci’s Demons as a digital single on April 12th and the full album will be available digitally to coincide with the season one finale.  A limited edition CD, with exclusive bonus content, is planned for the summer.

This August, the label will also release the soundtrack for the upcoming feature Europa Report. The film is a science fiction thriller starring Sharlto Copley (District 9) that explores the first manned mission to Jupiter’s mysterious moon, Europa. McCreary’s evocative score will feature string orchestra, solo piano and heavy synthesis.

“Bear’s relationship with fans is incredibly unique,” said Joe Augustine, the label’s General Manager. “This direct communication gives us a keen knowledge of what his fans really want, and our variable distribution model gives us the freedom and flexibility to deliver it.”

“I am fortunate to have collaborated with La-La Land Records and other labels to release over fifteen albums,” McCreary said.  “While many of these important relationships will continue, Sparks & Shadows has been formed to push boundaries further.”

Releases by Sparks & Shadows will be available worldwide, through select retail outlets, and digitally on all platforms. More at: www.sparksandshadows.net

ABOUT BEAR MCCREARY

Bear McCreary's unique combination of atypical instrumental background (he is a professional accordionist) with rigorous classical training prepared him to compose for disparate genres.  By the age of 24, McCreary was launched into pop culture history with his groundbreaking score to SyFy’s hit series Battlestar Galactica, for which he composed “the most innovative music on TV today” (Variety). It “fits the action so perfectly, it’s almost devastating: a sci-fi score like no other” (NPR).  Io9.com declared Bear McCreary one of the Ten Best Science Fiction Composers of all time, listing him alongside legends John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann.
McCreary continues to write for the television show The Walking Dead.  In 2013 he will lend his talents to SyFy and Trion World’s groundbreaking entertainment experience, Defiance, a combined launch of a MMO videogame and television series as well as Da Vinci’s Demons, a bold new historical fantasy series from David S. Goyer (co-writer of The Dark Knight trilogy) for STARZ.  His upcoming film projects include Europa Report and Knights of Badassdom.  His other credits include critically acclaimed scores for series such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Eureka and The Cape. His swashbuckling score for Human Target featured the largest orchestra ever assembled in the history of series television and earned him his first Emmy nomination.  His videogame credits include SOCOM 4 and Dark Void.

Norwegian composer Henrik Skram (90 Minutes) has composed a brilliant orchestral score for the Swedish drama Crestfallen (original title: Den som söker) starring Josephine Bornebusch. Following the Swedish theatrical release of the film on April 12, MovieScore Media releases the soundtrack album digitally online via iTunes and other platforms.

The score takes a sophisticated journey into dark territories with an emphasis on strings and piano, sometimes using unusual instrumental techniques to create an unsettling accompaniment to the story about a woman who, after her parents’ death in a car crash, finds out that she is adopted. Henrik Skram also uses some exciting brass writing for the more dramatic sequences in the film. Stylishly bookending the album are two compositions by Antonio Vivaldi that are featured in the film score.

Brian Tyler talks about his MARVEL’S IRON MAN 3 Original Score, which he composed and conducted (2013)

Via Disney, official press release

MARVEL MUSIC/HOLLYWOOD RECORDS PRESENTS
MARVEL’S IRON MAN 3 ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE SOUNDTRACK
AVAILABLE ON APRIL 30th

Burbank, CA -- April 5, 2013-- Marvel Music/Hollywood Records will release the original motion picture soundtrack for “Marvel’s Iron Man 3” on April 30, 2013.  Brian Tyler composed and conducted the original score.

Tyler has scored over 60 films that have grossed $3.6 billion worldwide.  He has composed and conducted the scores for “Eagle Eye” for producer Steven Spielberg; the box office hits “Fast Five” and “Fast and Furious” for Justin Lin; “The Expendables,” “Expendables 2” and “Rambo” directed by Sylvester Stallone; “Law Abiding Citizen,” starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler; the Keanu Reeves thriller, “Constantine” and the epic science-fiction film “Battle: Los Angeles.”
Tyler said, “When Marvel and Shane Black approached me about scoring ‘Iron Man 3,’ I was thrilled as a long-time fan of the series and super hero films in general. We all wanted this score to have a deeply thematic component with a strong melody. We felt that the story would lend itself best to go classic and use the orchestra as the main voice of the music, with horns and trumpets singing the new Iron Man theme in a strong way. I conducted the London Philharmonic at Abbey Road in order to give the score a sound that felt powerful enough to live up to its name. Shane Black was very supportive and collaborative in his vision for the film and the score, and Kevin Feige was also a kindred spirit in really reaching for something special.  Both of them are incredible film score buffs, and we all spoke the same film music language, which made for an awesome experience. In the end we went for a score that echoed the classics of super hero film history with a few surprises like a wild 1960s style main title piece that was an absolute blast to record.”

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

“Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Marvel’s Iron Man 3 original motion picture soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold on April 30, 2013.

HANS ZIMMER's "MAN OF STEEL" is coming via WaterTower Music (2013)

Everytime Zimmer gets a major new assignment, post-2000 especially, he often re-invents the whole modern hollywood film music sound. In Gladiator and a bit later on with BlackHawk Down, he showed the world that middle-Eastern sounds, wailing vocals and the Duduk when combined with modern western orchestral elements, can be awesome. Something that still keeps strong to date.

In 2005 he introduced the Batman Sound for Christopher Nolan's trilogy, which virtually re-designed all the hip-film music traits to date and gave birth to countless clones, good or bad, and of course the ever-cool trailer music sound so many companies and groups of composers are creating to date.

Then it was Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, and later on his Lorne Balfe collaborations which gave birth to the whole Inception / Tron Legacy sound (by Daft Punk, which he produced in his studios) which is no.1 trend since 2010. And now, comes Man of Steel, the Zack Snyder / Christopher Nolan modern (and possibly grim) version of Superman. Let's see if the music follows this pattern again.

As we learn via filmmusicreporter and amazon.com, WaterTower music is going to be releasing the score, with a release date for the Audio CD, of June 11, 2013. Stay tuned as more info becomes available. To The Wonder, the score to the new Terrence Mallick film by composer Hanan Townshend (2013)

Terrence Mallick is one of the most respected auteurs of modern cinema, and has often created controversy among film music circles, as he's known for his sometime odd musical choices. Frequently, he will employee a famous film composer (like Zimmer, Desplat or Horner) to write a full original score for him, only to chop it off in the mix and replace it with Wagner or other classical source music. The exception being Hans Zimmer's brilliant score for Mallick's THE THIN RED LINE, which has long proven the composer's best score to date. Often though, whatever his musical choices, Mallick's audio-visual spectacles are top.

So, let's see what will come out of this new film, To The Wonder, which gets an Original Motion Picture score by Hanan Townshend

Daniel Hope's bio:Daniel Hope was born in Durban in 1974. When he was six months old, his father, the distinguished novelist, poet and anti-apartheid activist Christopher Hope, was finally granted an exit visa. The family went first to Paris, then to London, where Daniel’s mother Eleanor was engaged by Yehudi Menuhin to be his secretary, later becoming the celebrated violinist and conductor’s long-time manager. In 1978 Hope began to study the violin in London with Sheila Nelson. Six years later he commenced his studies at the Royal College of Music with Itzhak Rashkovsky, Felix Andrievsky and Grigory Zhislin and appeared on British television. In 1985 he was invited by Menuhin to perform the Bartók Duos for German television, which began a long association between the two violinists that included over 60 concerts. From 1992–1998 he was a pupil of Zakhar Bron at London’s Royal Academy of Music, from which he graduated. Daniel Hope has appeared all over the globe with the world’s most renowned orchestras and conductors and has won numerous prizes for his recordings such as five Echo Awards, the Classical Brit Award, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis andfive Grammy® nominations.

Zartan and the Commander now have all the world leaders under Cobra’s control, with their advanced warheads aimed at innocent populaces around the world. Badly beaten, outnumbered and outgunned, the Joes make a desperate plan to overthrow Cobra Commander and take back the world, with their secret black operation called the “Second American Revolution,” which involves the return of the original G.I. Joe General Joseph Colton (Bruce WIllis).  Also starring Dwayne Johnson, with Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, and Lee Byung-hun reprising their roles from G.I. Joe: The Rise Of C.O.B.R.A.

The high-octane score is from action veteran Henry Jackman, who provided the sonic punch for Kick-Ass and Wreck-It Ralph.
