In honor of St. Patrick's Day (March 17th), Hallmark Hall of Fame is digitally re-releasing the sold out soundtrack to McKenzie's 1999 Irish film Durango.

Durango reached a billion listeners around the world at the 72nd Academy Awards "In Memorium" tribute and now countless millions as the closing titltes music to each and every new Hallmark Hall of Fame movie premier. 

Having Durango available as a didgital download from the longest running and most honored TV movie series in the USA, makes at least one Irish heart happy; and that's McKenzie's heart!

Durango" was the directorial debut of the award winning director and producer Brent Shields. It is one of the early symphonic scores composed by Mark McKenzie. The film tells the story about a young Irish man named Mark who learns that love and life are more than warm feelings and provision for self.  As he courageously drives cattle across the Irish countryside in the early 1940's he learns that love requires selflessness, responsibility, hard work, passion and tenderness.  Through risk taking, generosity, humor and personally taking responsibility for his circumstance, he musters the courage to stand up for what's right and lead others in the face of powerful opposition.

Produced by Richard Welsh, Brent Shields and Brad Moore the film starred Academy Award winning actress Brenda Fricker, Matt Keeslar and Nancy St. Alban.  The music was orchestrated by Mark McKenzie and Patrick Russ, and was recorded in the historic city of Prague using a 70 piece symphony orchestra, pan pipes, penny whistle, uilleann pipes and the traditional bodhran drums.  Credit goes to Recording engineer Jiri Zobac,  Mixing engineer Armin Steiner, Music editor Chris Ledesma and copyist Gregg Nestor.  The composer invites you to join him on his website and on facebook at Mark McKenzie Music.

Panu Aaltio receives IFMCA Award for Metsän Tarina - 2013

Composer Panu Aaltio has been presented with the International Film Music Critics Association Award for Best Documentary Score in 2012, for his score for Metsän Tarina, by IFMCA members Jon Broxton and Craig Richard Lysy.

This is Aaltio’s first nomination and first win. The other nominees in the documentary category were Kingdom of Plants by Joel Douek, Freddy Sheinfeld and Elik Alvarez, Los Mundos Sutiles by Pascal Gaigne, Samsara by Lisa Gerrard and Michael Stearns, and Shakespeare & Us by Miguel d’Oliveira.

Metsän Tarina, known in English as The Tale of a Forest, is directed by Kim Saarniluoto and Ville Suhonen, and is a sweeping, beautiful look at the rich animal and plant life that makes its home in the spectacular forests of northern Finland, and the obstacles both must overcome as the seasons change. Thematic, expressive, colorful and lively, Aaltio’s multi-faceted orchestral score accompanies the trials and tribulations of those that live in the region with drama, adventure, playfulness, and a vivid sense of wonder. IFMCA member James Southall called Aaltio’s music “simply exquisite” and hailed the score as “one of the most impressive of 2012”

Aaltio was born in the small town of Nurmijärvi in Finland in 1982. A classically trained cellist since the age of six, Aaltio studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he received the Harry Warren Scholarship for Excellence in Film Scoring. He began his career working with fellow Finnish composer Tuomas Kantelinen on scores such as Mother of Mine, Year of the Wolf and Arn: Tempelriddaren, and scored several small Finnish TV projects, before making his mainstream film music debut with the film The Tale of Dark Butterflies in 2008, for which he received a Jussi Award nomination, Finland’s equivalent of the Oscars

Since then, Aaltio’s credits have included the video game Apache Air Assault in 2010, the fantasy action-adventure Dawn of the Dragonslayer in 2011, and the thriller Syvälle Salattu (Body of Water), also in 2011. Three of his scores – including Metsän Tarina – have been released by the independent record label MovieScore Media, and are available for purchase here.

IFMCA - International Film Music Critics Association announces their 2012 Nominees for best in FILM, TV, GAME, DOCUMENTARY music.

INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC CRITICS AWARD NOMINATIONS REVEAL MOST OPEN RACE IN YEARS, WITH MULTIPLE NOMINATIONS FOR DANNA, DESPLAT, VELÁZQUEZ, WILLIAMS

FEBRUARY 7, 2013 — The International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) announces its list of nominees for excellence in musical scoring in 2012. The largest numbers this year are, for the most part, split evenly between four composers, all of whom received four nominations: MYCHAEL DANNA, ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, FERNANDO VELÁZQUEZ and veteran composer JOHN WILLIAMS.

The nominations for Danna, Velázquez and Williams were each for a single score – director Ang Lee’s vivid shipwreck drama LIFE OF PI, director Juan Antonio Bayona’s harrowing tsunami drama THE IMPOSSIBLE [LO IMPOSIBLE] and director Steven Spielberg’s look at the last months of the life of Abraham LINCOLN, respectively.

Desplat’s nominations were for his body of work in 2012 which included writing IFMCA Award-nominated music for the quirky comedy MOONRISE KINGDOM, the storybook animation RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, and the contemporary war thriller ZERO DARK THIRTY, as well as for the 1970s espionage thriller ARGO, the realistic French romantic drama RUST AND BONE [DE ROUILLE ET D’OS], the Italian satirical comedy REALITY, and the French-language biopic CLOCLO.

The other nominees for Film Score of the Year are the ambitious sci-fi drama CLOUD ATLAS by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil (two nominations), and director Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy prequel THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY by Howard Shore (two nominations).

Danna, Desplat, Velázquez and Williams are also short-listed for Film Composer of the Year along with DANNY ELFMAN, who enjoyed a stellar year composing music for such popular and successful films as DARK SHADOWS, FRANKENWEENIE, HITCHCOCK, MEN IN BLACK III, PROMISED LAND and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.

The IFMCA recognizes emerging talent in the film music world, and this year is no exception. The nominees in the Breakout Composer of the Year category include young Spanish composer ZELTIA MONTES for her work on the Spanish feature drama VILAMOR; composer DAN ROMER and composer/director BENH ZEITLIN for their captivating bluegrass-flavored score for the critically acclaimed BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD; JOSEPH TRAPANESE for his work on the animated TV show TRON: UPRISING; NATHAN JOHNSON for his unconventionally percussive music for the acclaimed sci-fi thriller LOOPER; and composer/conductor NIC RAINE, a long time associate of the late John Barry and contributor to Silva Screen and Tadlow Music’s series of re-recordings, who has begun to establish his own musical voice through his score for the German-language thriller WIR WOLLTEN AUFS MEER.

Ed Harris plays the captain of a Cold War Soviet missile submarine who has secretly been suffering from seizures that alter his perception of reality. He is rushed into a classified mission, where he is haunted by his past and challenged by a rogue KGB group (led by David Duchovny) bent on seizing control of the ship's nuclear missile. Jeff Rona delivers a mysterious and suspenseful score. At times hypnotic and eerie, then again energized and action pact, the score beautifully captures the tension between the main protagonists and the agonizing dilemma faced by the submarine's captain.

(West Hollywood, CA)- January 29, 2013—If the words “other-worldly,” “mysterious,” and “extreme” can be used to describe the preternatural landscapes and stirring emotions that Iceland evokes in our imaginations, then Icelandic composer Atli Orvarsson has certainly hit home with his score for the film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, now in theaters. Hansel and Gretel is a dark and edgy reinvention of the classic fairytale in which Hansel and Gretel have grown up to become highly-skilled bounty hunters out to rid the world of witches. Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) directs the film, and along with Dante Harper, Wirkola also wrote the screenplay. Hansel and Gretel is a Paramount Pictures/MGM production starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Peter Stormare. In addition to scoring Hansel and Gretel, Orvarsson recently scored the dark drama/thriller A Single Shot starring Sam Rockwell. Orvarsson currently scores the hit NBC series Chicago Fire, for which he provides original music every week, and he is contributing music under Hans Zimmer to the new Zack Snyder Superman reinstallmentMan of Steel. The Hansel and Gretel score album is now available on La-La Land Records.

Orvarsson fondly dubs the music he created for Hansel and Gretel ‘Baroque ‘n Roll’ – a unique and complex mix of heavy metal, early classical and experimental dance influences that infuse heart-pounding energy into the action-packed scenes that comprise this adult-oriented thriller. The development of Orvarsson’s score involved drawing inspiration from the input and ideas of the Hansel and Gretel filmmakers. “If it hadn’t been for all of this experimentation, I never would have come up with this music the way it is,” he explains. “We experimented with going down several different roads during the writing process and ended up with elements from all of them. It was a fun ride.”

Orvarsson’s talent, experience, versatility, and skill combine with his Icelandic roots to produce an individualized and compelling style that contributes to his success as a musician and composer. Orvarsson earned three platinum and two gold records as a member of the Icelandic band Salin hans Jons mins before studying film composing at Berklee College of Music and the North Carolina School of the Arts. After arriving in Los Angeles, Orvarsson began working alongside TV veteran Mike Post on projects such as NYPD Blue and three Law and Order programs. Orvarsson soon caught the attention of the highly renowned composer Hans Zimmer who, impressed, extended an invitation to Orvarsson to join Zimmer’s team at Remote Control Studios. Orvarsson’s credits include orchestrating and writing music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the Pirates of the Caribbean series. He has contributed music to films including Angels and Demons and The Holiday, and has scored numerous films including The Eagle, Vantage Point, Babylon A.D., the Morgan Freeman caper Thick as Thieves, The Fourth Kind, and the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy Season of the Witch.

JOSEPH TRAPANESE - Tron:Uprising (2013)

Bridging the gap between 1982's “TRON” and 2010's “TRON: Legacy,” composer Joseph Trapanese follows in the footsteps of Wendy Carlos' and Daft Punk's groundbreaking scores with his work on "TRON: Uprising."  As arranger and orchestrator he collaborated with Daft Punk on their "TRON: Legacy" soundtrack, a top 10 album in the US and certified gold with over 500,000 units sold.  For "Uprising," Joseph adapted the original Daft Punk synthesizer patches and sound palette used in TRON: Legacy for Beck's journey in Argon City, paying homage to the film while also broadening the sonic world of The Grid with new instrumentation and color.

“The artistic and creative directors of the series worked closely with the writers of the film to create a firm connection to the film while being its own unique, distinct world," said Trapanese. "That’s where this process was most rewarding, the ability to start with a framework of cool sounds, ideas, and textures, but then take it to the new places that the series went.”

Trapanese’s cinematic score paints an aural picture that matches “TRON: Uprising’s” futuristic animation. Set in the era of “TRON” between the stories in the 1982 feature film and Walt Disney Studios' “TRON: Legacy,” “TRON: Uprising” delves inside the computer world of The Grid and the people who live there with a visually striking series produced in CG animation with 2D aesthetic. “TRON: Uprising” stars Elijah Wood (Beck), Mandy Moore (Mara), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Paige), and Bruce Boxleitner reprising the role as Tron. Fans of TRON: Uprising will recognize Trapanese’s elegantly crafted compositions on the soundtrack.

“We had a lot more footage to cover than we had with the film, almost 7 hours,” says Trapanese. “And with animation, we’re not hindered by the limitations of visual effects and real world stunts. The scope can be much bigger.  Through the two years of collaboration with Daft Punk, we found a balance of electronics and orchestra that worked very well for The Grid, and I've tried to build on that. The remixes for the show are from artists whom I have a great respect for and Cole’s track is added on as his unique, artistic reaction to what we’ve been doing.”

A classically trained musician, Trapanese has played the piano and trombone from a young age—including performing at Carnegie Hall with the New York Youth Symphony. He completed his undergraduate work in music composition at the Manhattan School Of Music then continued at UCLA’s Music for Visual Media program for graduate school. Here, he was given the first ever Jerry Goldsmith Award in 2007. Soon after, Trapanese started working on “Dexter” as orchestrator.  Since then he has provided arrangements and orchestrations for “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightening Thief,” “Butter,” “Fast Five,” among numerous other films and television shows.
