For a disparate group of English pensioners (Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup), retirement takes an unconventional turn when they abandon their homeland, enticed by advertisements for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a seemingly luxurious sanctuary for “the elderly and beautiful” in Jaipur, India. On arrival, they discover that the hotel falls somewhat short of the romantic idyll promised in the brochure, but they are gradually won over by the ever-optimistic young manager Sonny (Dev Patel), and tentatively embark on a new adventure, finding that life can begin again when you let go of the past.

The original soundtrack is the work of Thomas Newman, one of the most respected composers in the movie business, who has scored over fifty feature films including The Iron Lady, American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Wall-E, Finding Nemo and The Green Mile, as well as writing the memorable theme music for the TV series Six Feet Under. Newman has been nominated for an Academy Award on no less than ten occasions, nine times in the category Best Original Score and once for Best Original Song. He has won a BAFTA, two Grammys and an Emmy, and has also been nominated for a Golden Globe.

Born in Los Angeles, Yale-educated Thomas Newman comes from a prominent Hollywood musical dynasty: his father, brother, sister and uncle have all composed for movies, and the singer-songwriter Randy Newman is his cousin.

Under the unforgiving desert sky, two warring leaders come face to face.

The victorious Nesib, Emir of Hobeika, lays down his peace terms to his rival Amar, Sultan of Salmaah. The two men agree that neither can lay claim to the area of no man’s land between them called The Yellow Belt. In return, Nesib will adopt Amar’s two boys Saleeh and Auda as a guarantee that neither man can invade the other.

Twelve years later, Saleeh and Auda have grown into young men. Saleeh, the warrior, itches to escape his gilded cage and return to his father’s land. Auda cares only for books and the pursuit of knowledge. One day, their adopted father Nesib is visited by an American from Texas. He tells the Emir that his land is blessed with oil and promises him riches beyond his wildest imagination. Nesib imagines a realm of infinite possibility, a kingdom with roads, schools and hospitals all paid for by the black gold beneath the barren sand. There is only one problem. The precious oil is located in the Yellow Belt.

The stage is now set for an epic showdown for control of the Yellow Belt, for control of the two kingdoms, for control of the future.

James Horner is one of the most celebrated modern film composers. Having created the music for dozens of the most memorable and successful films of the past two decades, Horner was honored with two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for James Cameron’s Titanic.

In addition, he has earned Academy Award nominations for his Original Scores for Avatar, House of Sand and Fog, A Beautiful Mind, Braveheart, Apollo 13, Field of Dreams and Aliens, and for the Original Song “Somewhere Out There“ from An American Tale.

Horner’s sweeping dramatic score for Black Gold is an integral element to the film which will transport audiences into the heart of the Arabian desert.

Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures will open the film internationally beginning December 23, 2011.

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli today announced that composer Thomas Newman will score the 23rd James Bond film, SKYFALL. “We are delighted to confirm that Thomas Newman will score SKYFALL. Thomas is one of the most respected and successful composers, he has a long history of working with Sam Mendes and we look forward to welcoming him into the Bond family,” commented Michael. G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Said Newman today, “I’m incredibly excited to be working with Sam again. It’s a real thrill to be able to collaborate on something as special as a Bond movie.”

Thomas Newman, born on 20th October 1955 in Los Angeles, California, has scored four of Sam Mendes’s previous movies: American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road. He has composed the music to more than fifty films and television series including Erin Brockovich, The Shawshank Redemption and Wall-E and has earned ten Academy Award nominations, won a BAFTA, five Grammys and an Emmy.

Newman takes over musical duties from David Arnold who is currently Music Director of the London Olympic and Paralympic closing ceremonies. David will continue to be involved with the 50th anniversary of Bond and recently produced the John Barry Memorial Concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Said Arnold of the news: “I’m a huge fan of Thomas Newman so I am as excited as anyone to see where Sam Mendes and his team take James Bond on his 50th anniversary.”

A couple of weeks ago at approximately eleven-hundred hours, I was able to view a top secret macro-film codenamed MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL (2011). It's one of the more sensational action films I've observed in several decades and one of my favorite movies of 2011. Other agents may try to view this film utilizing more compact projection methods but I learned through diligence in the field that the only way to properly experience it is by employing an Image MAXimum presentation system or IMAX for short. The 70mm footage saturating the near-entirety of the picture is not an amateurish ruse hacked together by some rookie agency. It's an elevation…literally!

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 28, 2011)– Mark McKenzie scores the 3D animated faith-based family film The Greatest Miracle (El Gran Milagro). The film is directed by Bruce Morris (Finding Nemo) and produced by Mexico City-based Pablo Barosso and Claudia Nemer. The Greatest Miracle was released in both Spanish and English in Los Angeles and New York City for the week of October 14th to qualify for academy award consideration. In one week release, it was the third place film with the highest per screen average against films opening that week, including Footloose.

McKenzie is one of a small number of composers working in Hollywood who orchestrates every note he composes. Working for the first time with Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love), we are excited to announce our release of his sweeping, dramatic and exquisitely beautiful orchestral score for Princess Ka'iulani, a historical drama about the Hawaiian princess attempt to maintain the independence of Hawaii against the American colonization.

We strongly feel that Ka'iulani might be Warbeck's finest score to date: it's a very elegant, beautifully orchestrated work that has great themes, intimate emotions and subtle suspense writing too. Fittingly, the music is performed by the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra which is doing a first-rate job bringing Warbeck's passionate writing to life.

Implementing a new policy with this release and hoping to contribute to a new industry standard, MovieScore Media will denote the number of the manufactured edition on the CD. The first edition of Princess Ka’iulani is limited to 500 copies.

"Symphony of Hope" is a musical fundraising project which was originally designed to help the people of Haiti in their desperate time of need. A year after the terrible earthquake which has destroyed the lives of thousands of Haitians, the need for assistance is even greater than ever.

"Symphony of Hope" is a collaboration by 25 of today's leading Oscar(r), Tony(r), Grammy(r) and Emmy(r) winning composers to benefit Haiti Earthquake Relief. The "Symphony of Hope" begins with an original Haitian melody, then each composer contributes an additional 8-32 bars of music to the piece and then passes it along to the next composer. This is symbolic in the way that one lending hand passes on to another lending hand and so on and eventually a beautiful outcome is achieved.

The orchestral piece was recorded this spring on the Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Brothers Pictures, with everyone donating their time - the composers, orchestrators, copyists, musicians, scoring stage technicians, etc. Recording of additional pieces happened in Los Angeles following these sessions to provide additional music inspired by the people of Haiti.

The entire process was filmed in high definition by award winning filmmaker Brian Weidling and plans for a film documenting the making of the piece as well as a live benefit concert for the world premiere are also underway. All proceeds from the sale of the album and any related material

BuySoundtrax Records is proud to announce the release of The Music of Battlestar Galactica For Solo Piano a two-disc set featuring newly recorded piano performances by Joohyun Park of Bear McCreary’s groundbreaking score from the award-winning series on the SyFy channel from 2004-2009. All of the arrangements were done by McCreary and were featured in the Battlestar Galactica Songbook, released by Hal Leonard in 2011. The album features appearances by soprano Melanie Henley Heyn and McCreary himself, who performs “Kara Remembers” which was conceived as a track to be played by four hands, with Park. The package features liner notes by Randall Larson and unique artwork by frequent Battlestar Galactica vocalist Raya Yarbrough.

Variety called composer Bear McCreary’s score for Battlestar Galactica – the award-winning series on the SyFy channel from 2004-2009 – “the most innovative music on TV today,” and NPR said it “fits the action so perfectly, it’s almost devastating: (it’s) a sci-fi score like no other.”

The music from Battlestar Galactica has a rabid following. No fewer than six soundtrack albums have been released to date, all selling well and enthusiastically praised by critics. There have also been several live concerts featuring the music. In 2008, more than 1,000 fans attended two sold-out shows at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, with some fans flying in from as far as England and Australia. The following year, the Battlestar Galactica Orchestra performed three sold-out shows at the House of Blues in San Diego during Comic Con. In 2010, McCreary conducted the world premiere performance of the Battlestar Galactica Symphony, as part of the renowned Fimucite Film Music Festival in Tenerife, Spain. In 2011, McCreary again treated Spanish fans to the music as part of the Festival Internacional de Música de Cine in Ubeda. A ballet based on McCreary’s scores for the series premiered in 2009, performed by the dancers of the Theaterhagen in Hagen, Germany.

On Saturday, October 22nd at 8:00p.m., Oscar winners Elliot Goldenthal, Howard Shore, and Hans Zimmer will be the distinguished guests at the closing ceremony of the 38th Ghent Film Festival at the Kuipke in Ghent. Following the annual presentation of the prestigious film music awards, the Brussels Philharmonic – the Orchestra of Flanders - will perform a singular selection from the three great masters’ extensive oeuvres conducted by Dirk Brossé. In keeping with tradition, the winner of last year’s World Soundtrack Discovery Award will take the stage during the awards ceremony. Abel Korzeniowski will perform his award-winning music from A Single Man, which also earned him the Public Choice Award in 2010. As always, the live music will be accompanied by striking film footage. The concert is being dedicated in memory of Ronni Chasen, longtime representative and friend of the film festival.

The World Soundtrack Academy was founded in 2001 by the Ghent International Film Festival to celebrate the role of music in film and honor film composers. The WSA Academy now has over 300 international members comprised of composers, film professionals, record label executives and other representatives of the film music business.

The 11th World Soundtrack Awards, which will be held at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent on 22 October,welcome a new star in their line-up: none other than three-time Oscar winner and “father of disco” Giorgio Moroder (Midnight Express, Flashdance, Scarface). During the awards ceremony, he will be conferred a Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional career in film music. A selection from his work will be performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé.

Film Festival is very proud to welcome living legend Giorgio Moroder to the World Soundtrack Awards, where he will be presented with the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award. Giorgio Moroder instantly reminds us of Donna Summer’s many disco hits. Her orgiastic panting hit I FEEL LOVE is the ultimate symbol of the hedonistic fun of the 70s and 80s. More than 30 years ago, Moroder revolutionised electronic dance music, and to this day, he is anything but forgotten: as the creator of synth-pop disco, he continues to be a great example for many young dance producers and electro musicians. Internationally, he inspired major performers like Madonna and electro wizard Jeff Mills. In his home country his name is also synonymous with the new disco scene.

Naturally, the Ghent Film Festival wants to honour Giorgio Moroder primarily for his film music. He introduced his unusual, recognisable sound with his first score, for Alan Parker’s Midnight Express (1978), with thrilling beats loudly echoing throughout the film like a human heartbeat. After his score for Foxes (which included the Donna Summer hit ON THE RADIO), Moroder achieved cult status with two scores for Paul Schrader films: American Gigolo (1980), which included the Blondie song CALL ME, and Cat People (1982), for which David Bowie sang the title song, a performance sure to set your teeth on edge. Moroder achieved his greatest commercial success in 1983 with Flashdance (two no. 1 singles and a soundtrack that sold more than ten million copies). Another major success in the film music career of the inventor of euro disco is the baroque score for Brian De Palma’s masterpiece, the epic crime drama Scarface (1983).

And of course there is Moroder’s most audacious contribution to film music history: the new soundtrack he created in 1984 for Fritz Lang’s monumental classic Metropolis. Moroder brought the crushing images of this silent film from 1927 back to life with a rock-new wave soundtrack brimming with songs by pop stars Pat Benatar, Freddie Mercury and Bonnie Tyler. Moreover, he dipped every scene into a sensational coloured hue, added all sorts of visual effects and increased the speed of the image sequences of the original edit. Some purists cried blue murder, but Moroder’s electronic lifting transformed a piece destined to be forgotten on a museum display into a new film experience and a prophetic announcement of an entire new culture of zapping, mixing and sampling.”

The World Soundtrack Awards & concert will be held on Saturday 22 October 2011 at 8 p.m. at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent. The programme includes music by Moroder, Hans Zimmer (Inception), Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings), Elliot Goldenthal (Alien 3) and Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man). The concert will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé, and will, as always, be accompanied by film scenes projected on a large screen.

ALBERTO IGLESIAS - The monk (2011, cd)

New adaptation of the famous Gothic novel by Matthew G. Lewis, written in 1796, about the tortuous life of the Spanish friar Ambrosio during the times of the Inquisiciónn. This was the dream project of the Spanish director Luis Buñuel for many years, actually wrote the screenplay for the famous version filmed in 1972 by Ado Kyrou, starring Franco Nero and Natalie Delon, with a wonderful score by Piero Piccioni (whose CD premiere has been announced by the label Digitmovies for the month of September).

LOS ANGELES (July 21, 2011) – Award-winning composers Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, the founder and director of the festival (Finding Neverland), Christopher Young (Spiderman 3, The Grudge) and George S. Clinton (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Tooth Fairy) are joining the jury of the Transatlantyk International Film & Music Festival. The festival runs August 5-13 in Poznan, Poland. Also joining the jury are Paul Broucek, Music President at Warner Bros. Pictures and Peter Golub, Director of the Sundance Film Music Program.

Featuring film and music from around the world, the festival includes two international competitions: the Transatlantyk Film Music Competition and the Transatlantyk Instant Composition Contest, where contestants will view a short film and compose an impromptu piano solo in front of a live audience. The music program includes a competition with a cash prize of $20,000 and seminars led by award-winning film composers.

The eclectic Transatlantyk music program will take the audience from a symphony concert hall to a club dance floor. Interactive events include the Transatlantyk Club, a place where DJs from all around the world will take the stage.

150 films will be screened during the festival. The program includes world premieres, festival award winners, documentaries and retrospectives, as well as unique categories, including culinary cinema and 1950s Hollywood B movies.

Representing MovieScore Media producer Mikael Carlsson's first album as a composer in his own right, this very special album features a selection of concert works written for mixed à cappella choir.

This is their second release of non-film music, but just as Andrew Pearce's grand orchestral album Cinema Symphony, theRainbow Suite and the other choral works featured on Mikael's album definitely has a cinematic quality.The main work is a 30 minute choral suite in six movements focused on the colours of the rainbow flag and their meaning. Other material include original settings of sacred texts such as O Magnum Mysterium, Agnus Dei and Pater Noster.

Beautifully performed by the Haga Motettkör, conducted by Ulrike Heider, the album is exquisitely recorded by engineer Erik Sikkema who utilized his very own technique to capture a very authentic and vibrant sound of the choir.

BRIAN TYLER on Sounding Off: Video Interview with FAST FIVE composer Brian Tyler

FAST FIVE has been burning up the box office as the original crew comes together in this fifth film in the series to reestablish old relationships, create new ones, pull off a high stakes heist and, well you know, race cars . Unlike the previous four films, FAST FIVE has started moving further away from its origins as an almost music video set to car races, with the story evolving and the stakes in both their personal and business lives getting raised at every turn. To that end, the music in this installment in the franchise was much more score-heavy, relying on full orchestration to support the story and action scenes rather than just utilizing songs from various artists.

To bring this world to life, director Justin Lin turned to composer Brian Tyler (BATTLE: LA, EAGLE EYE) who had also scored the past two films (and possibly a bit of the first...) in the series, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT and FAST & FURIOUS, to create the high drama, high action score for FAST FIVE.
